Phonological Processes and Phonetic Rules
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. Relating phonological representations to phonetic output In both generative and natural phonology, phonological representations and alternations have been described in terms of categorical feature values, as in Jakobson, Fant, & Halle’s (1963) original conception. This categorical representation contrasts with instrumental phonetic data, which present the speech signal as temporally, qualitatively, and quantitatively non-categorical and continuous. The question that will be addressed here is how phonetic representation (‘surface’ phonological representation) and speech are related. Generativists and naturalists have taken two quite different views on this. The generativist view, and that of most recent writers on phonetics, has been that phonetic representation and speech are related by language-specific phonetic rules that associate binary phonological values with gradient phonetic values. The naturalist position has been that the relationship is universally determined in the act of speaking. The reason that the generative and natural views are so distinct is related to their rather distinct views of what surface phonological representation is like.

Evolving Phonological Rules Using Grammatical Evolution
Phonetic transcription is a core procedure of continuous speech recognition systems and speech synthesizers. The more correct phonetic translation is the more successful applications using phonetic transcription are. Phonological rules translate text to graphemes. These rules significantly reduce size of databases with words and it’s phonetic transcription and speeds up transcription process. T...

1. I will be arguing from data on vowel shifts in progress, and from principles of language change, that language specific phonetic implementation rules must be part of speaker knowledge, and thus part of language acquisition. Then, I will sketch an abstract model of what phonetic implementation could be like. Having argued these points, I will address how this approach interacts with phonologi...
متن کاملRule naturalness and the acquisition of phonology
Standard generative phonology: privileged status to " natural " phonological rules (those with a clear phonetic motivation). Making it easier for theories to express common processes (which tend strongly to belong to the natural category) is often considered a primary goal. " Unnatural " phenomena are typically relegated to a " peripheral " or secondary status. The usual (tacit) assumption: the...
متن کاملAutomatic Phonetic Transcription by Phonological Derivation
Automatic phonetic transcription tools usually perform phonetic transcriptions directly from orthographic representations. Although these approaches often achieve good results, theoretical studies suggest that including morphophonological knowledge allows those systems to improve their performance. Following this idea, we developed a tool which first obtains an underlying representation of each...
متن کاملThe Role of Phonetic Naturalness in Phonological Rule Acquisition
The speed and reliability of language acquisition in human infants remain puzzling facts, especially given the huge variability in the quality and quantity of the speech input. It has been argued that such a robust learning path is due to a specialized Language Acquisition Device (Chomsky 1965), which incorporates statistical mechanisms to extract regular patterns from noisy input (e.g. Saffran...
