The Suppression of Phonon induced Noise in Niobium Superconducting Tunnel Junction X-ray Detectors

چکیده
An investigation into the phonon contamination of X-ray sensitive superconducting tunnel junctions arising from the X-ray photoabsorption in various substrates has been conducted. Results are presented on the design of a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) which substantially reduces or even eliminates phonon induced noise from the substrate. Such noise is the predominant feature in X-ray spectra from junctions due to the bulk of the photons being absorbed in the substrate rather than in the thin superconducting lm. The design involves the choice of a suitable buuer sandwich between the substrate and the STJ. Such a buuer would appear not only to attenuate the phonons created in the X-ray photoabsorption in the substrate but also to scatter the phonons inelastically, introducing a frequency down-conversion. Such a process ensures that few phonons of energy suucient to break Cooper pairs in the superconducting lm of the STJ enter the junction.

The performance of an energy sensitive, niobium superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) detector is investigated by measuring the pulse height produced by impacting molecular and atomic ions at different kinetic energies. Ions are produced by laser desorption and matrix-assisted laser desorption in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Our results show that the STJ detector pulse height decreases f...
متن کاملQuantum partition noise in a superconducting tunnel junction
The theory of charge partition noise of quasiparticles in a superconducting tunnel junction is developed. The charge fluctuations are shown to have a significant contribution from partition noise that arises from the quantum superposition of the electron and hole character of the quasiparticles. These fluctuations are dominant at small bias voltage. The charge fluctuations are compared to the u...

We propose a novel hot-electron microcalorimeter for measurements of x-rays or phonons produced by the interaction of a high energy particle with the underlying substrate. This type of detector uses a normal metal film to absorb the incoming excitation which subsequently heats the electrons above the lattice temperature. The temperature of the electrons is measured from the current voltage char...
متن کاملNoise mechanisms in superconducting tunnel-junction detectors
We present a theory and measurements of noise mechanisms in superconducting tunnel-junction detectors used as single-photon spectrometers. These mechanisms result from incomplete cooling of the excited quasiparticles in the tunnel-junction electrode. Due to the incomplete cooling, only a fraction of the initially created charge is collected by tunneling. Additional effects include reduced dynam...
