MOJAVE : Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments . IV . The Parent Luminosity Function of Radio

چکیده
We use a complete sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected on the basis of relativistically beamed 15 GHz radio flux density (MOJAVE: Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments) to derive the parent radio luminosity function (RLF) of bright radio-selected blazar cores. We use a maximum likelihood method to fit a beamed RLF to the observed data and thereby recover the parameters of the intrinsic (unbeamed) RLF. We analyze two subsamples of the MOJAVE sample: the first contains only objects of known FR II class, with a total of 103 sources, and the second subsample adds 24 objects of uncertain FR class for a total of 127 sources. Both subsamples exclude four known FR I radio galaxies and two gigahertz-peaked spectrum sources. We obtain good fits to both subsamples using a single power law intrinsic RLF and a pure density evolution function of the form z m exp −1/2((z − z 0)/σ) 2. We find that a previously reported break in the observed MOJAVE RLF actually arises from using incomplete bins (because of the luminosity cutoff) across a steep and strongly evolving RLF, and does not reflect a break in the intrinsic RLF. متن کاملMOJAVE : Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments
The MOJAVE blazar sample consists of the 133 brightest, most compact radio-loud AGN in the northern sky, and is selected on the basis of VLBA 2 cm correlated flux density exceeding 1.5 Jy (2 Jy for declinations south of 0 •) at any epoch between 1994 and 2003. Since 1994 we have been gathering VLBA data on the sample to measure superluminal jet speeds and to better understand the parsec−scale k...
متن کاملAGN Jet Kinematics on Parsec-Scales: The MOJAVE Program
Very long baseline interferometry offers the best means of investigating the complex dynamics of relativistic jets powered by active galactic nuclei, via multi-epoch, sub-milliarcsecond, full-polarization imaging at radio wavelengths. Although targeted studies have yielded important information on the structures of individual AGN jets, the strong selection effects associated with relativistical...

متن کاملA Connection between Apparent Vlba Jet Speeds and Initial Agn Detections Made by the Fermi Gamma-ray Observatory
In its first three months of operations, the Fermi Gamma-ray Observatory has detected approximately one quarter of the radio-flux limited MOJAVE sample of bright flat-spectrum AGN at energies above 100 MeV. We have investigated the apparent parsec-scale jet speeds of 26 MOJAVE AGN measured by the VLBA that are in the LAT Bright AGN Sample (LBAS). We find that the γ-ray bright quasars have faste...
