The Forensic Use of DNA Profiling

چکیده
The application of DNA profiling in the criminal justice system is an important issue facing Australian courts and criminal investigators today. The technology is changing rapidly and several new techniques are becoming available. Increasingly, legal advisers are required to come to grips with this kind of scientific evidence. DNA profiling has been described as a powerful breakthrough in forensic science by many. However, the scientific validity of its application by individual laboratories has been called into question by some. The implementation of DNA profiling also raises the issue of privacy. Should it be compulsory for all suspects to allow access to body samples? How long should the information be stored? This Trends and Issues canvasses these matters and outlines our current knowledge of DNA technology. The authors raise a number of issues that limit the use of profiling in forensic investigations, and stress the importance of the establishment of national standard techniques and the establishment of population frequency databases that reflect Australia's particular ethnic composition. The Forensic Use of DNA Profiling is a major contribution to the debate on law reform. In the interests of justice, laws in all Australian jurisdictions need to be enacted which protect an individual's privacy, but allow our investigators access to a technology which can help in excluding the innocent. Deoxyribonucleic Acid Profiling
The forensic biologist has traditionally used a large set of markers including blood group antigens and serum proteins to establish links between evidence and comparison samples. These markers are polymorphic and genetically determined. In 1985, a new technique was introduced which opened the door to the forensic use of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) technology: its inventor coined the term ‘DNA R...
متن کاملDNA Profiling in Forensic Science
The discovery of hypervariable minisatellite deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by Jeffreys and co-workers in 1985 provided forensic scientists with a means of discriminating between individuals that was many orders of magnitude greater than the traditional methods used before that date. Probably themost important forensic application of DNA profiling is in the identification of rapists. The original ...
متن کاملA Guide for Mitochondrial DNA Analysis in Non-Human Forensic Investigations
In recent years, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) typing has become established as a powerful tool for forensic investigations. The sequencing of mtDNA is now a standard laboratory procedure for the examination of degraded casework samples of human origin, with unique advantages over nuclear DNA profiling systems. Nonetheless, the use of mtDNA in non-human forensic science has only recently gained att...

The purpose of this work is to promote and facilitate forensic profiling and chemical analysis of illicit drug samples in order to determine their origin, methods of production and transfer through the country. The article is based on the gas chromatography analysis of heroin samples seized from three different locations in Serbia. Chemometric approach with appropriate statistical tools (multip...

former NSW policeman, Harry Blackburn, was cleared of multiple sex charges on the 11 October 1989, and a Victorian was convicted of rape a week earlier. In both cases DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) profiling was used. DNA profiling illustrates the most powerful concept in forensic science, the power to eliminate a suspect. DNA profiling has a very high discrimination power and is therefore very po...
