چکیده

Two parametrizations for second order velocity moments, the Batchelor parametrization for the r-space structure function and a common parametrization for the energy spectrum, E(p) ∝ p exp(−p/pd), are examined and compared. In particular, we investigate corrections to the local scaling exponents induced by finite size effects. The behavior of local r– and p–space exponents differs dramatically. The Batchelor type parametrization leads to energy pileups in p-space at the ends of the ISR. These bottleneck effects result in an extended r-space scaling range, comparable to experimental ones for the same Taylor-Reynolds number Reλ. Shear effects are discussed in terms of (global) apparent scaling correction δζ to classical scaling. The scaling properties of δζ(Reλ) differ not only among the parametrizations considered, but also among r– and p–space for a given parametrization. The difference can be traced back to the subtleties of the crossovers in the velocity moments. Our observations emphasize the need for more experimental information on crossovers between different subranges.

Simulations of Electron Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

We present numerical simulations of electron magnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) and electron reduced MHD (ERMHD) turbulence. Comparing scaling relations, we find that both EMHD and ERMHD turbulence show similar spectra and anisotropy. We develop new techniques to study anisotropy of EMHD turbulence. Our detailed study of anisotropy of EMHD turbulence supports our earlier result of k‖ ∝ k ⊥ scaling, whe...

Point - source scalar turbulence

The statistics of a passive scalar randomly emitted from a point source is investigated analytically. Our attention has been focused on the two-point equal-time scalar correlation function. The latter is indeed easily related to the spectrum, a statistical indicator widely used both in experiments and in numerical simulations. The only source of inhomogeneity/anisotropy is in the injection mech...

Passive advection of a vector field: Anisotropy, finite correlation time, exact solution, and logarithmic corrections to ordinary scaling.

In this work we study the generalization of the problem considered in [Phys. Rev. E 91, 013002 (2015)] to the case of finite correlation time of the environment (velocity) field. The model describes a vector (e.g., magnetic) field, passively advected by a strongly anisotropic turbulent flow. Inertial-range asymptotic behavior is studied by means of the field theoretic renormalization group and ...

Anisotropy of the Lundgren-Townsend model of fine-scale turbulence

The effect of a statistically anisotropic distribution of stretched vortices in the LundgrenTownsend model of the fine-scale structure of homogeneous turbulence is considered. Lundgren’s argument that anisotropy does not affect the three-dimensional energy spectrum is confirmed. Examples of velocity derivative moments and one-dimensional vorticity spectra are worked out for the case of an axisy...

2 5 N ov 2 00 4 Magnetic turbulence in the plasma sheet

Small-scale magnetic turbulence observed by the Cluster spacecraft in the plasma sheet is investigated by means of a wavelet estimator suitable for detecting distinct scaling characteristics even in noisy measurements. The spectral estimators used for this purpose are affected by a frequency dependent bias. The variances of the wavelet coefficients, however, match the power-law shaped spectra, ...
