Triadin, a linker for calsequestrin and the ryanodine receptor.

Protein components of the triad junction play essential roles in muscle excitationcontraction coupling (EC coupling). Considerable research has been performed on the identification and characterization of proteins that regulate calcium storage and release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (McPherson and Campbell, 1993; FranziniArmstrong and Jorgensen, 1994). Key proteins characterized include the...

Roles for the sarco-/endoplasmic reticulum in cardiac myocyte contraction, protein synthesis, and protein quality control.

Although the function of the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) in cardiac contractile calcium handling is well established, its roles in protein synthesis, folding, and quality control in cardiac myocytes are not as clear. This review explores evidence suggesting that, in cardiac myocytes, protein synthesis and contractile calcium handling may be physically and functionally integrated.

Reconstitution of an active calcium pump in sarcoplasmic reticulum.

Recovery of calcium transport and calcium-activated ATPase activity was studied in relation to the retention of protein components in sarcoplasmic reticulum reconstituted after solubilization with deoxycholate and centrifugation, followed by removal of the detergent from the supernatant by dialysis. Control sarcoplasmic reticulum was similarly treated except for omission of deoxycholate. Maximu...

Effect of the lipid environment on protein motion and enzymatic activity of sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase.

In order to investigate the roles of the physical states of phospholipid and protein in the enzymatic behavior of the Ca2+ -ATPase from sarcoplasmic reticulum, we have modified the lipid phase of the enzyme, observed the effects on the enzymatic activity at low temperatures, and correlated these effects with spectroscopic measurements of the rotational motions of both the lipid and protein comp...
