Geometry of crumpled paper.

چکیده
We measure the geometry of a crumpled sheet of paper with laser-aided topography and discuss its statistical properties. The curvature of an elastoplastic fold scales linearly with applied force. The curvature distribution follows an exponential form with regions of high curvature localized along ridges. The measured ridge length distribution is consistent with a hierarchical model for ridge breaking during crumpling. A large fraction of the ridges are observed to terminate without bifurcating, and the ridge network connectedness is not as complete as anticipated. The self-affinity of the surface is characterized by a Hurst exponent of 0.71+/-0.01 in contrast with previous results.

Three-dimensional structure of a sheet crumpled into a ball.
When a thin sheet is crushed into a small three-dimensional volume, it invariably forms a structure with a low volume fraction but high resistance to further compression. Being a far-from-equilibrium process, forced crumpling is not necessarily amenable to a statistical description in which the parameters of the initially flat sheet and the final confinement fully specify the resulting crumpled...
متن کاملStretchable and High-Performance Supercapacitors with Crumpled Graphene Papers
Fabrication of unconventional energy storage devices with high stretchability and performance is challenging, but critical to practical operations of fully power-independent stretchable electronics. While supercapacitors represent a promising candidate for unconventional energy-storage devices, existing stretchable supercapacitors are limited by their low stretchability, complicated fabrication...
متن کاملCrumpling of a pyrolytic graphite sheet
Crumpled graphite thin film balls were fabricated with Panasonic Pyrolytic Graphite Sheets (PGS). The fractal dimension, mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity of the crumpled PGS balls have been investigated. The universal local fractal dimension of the PGS balls is found to be 2.58, which is consistent with that of paper balls. The crumpled PGS balls show good mechanical property ...
متن کاملSelf-dispersed crumpled graphene balls in oil for friction and wear reduction.
Ultrafine particles are often used as lubricant additives because they are capable of entering tribological contacts to reduce friction and protect surfaces from wear. They tend to be more stable than molecular additives under high thermal and mechanical stresses during rubbing. It is highly desirable for these particles to remain well dispersed in oil without relying on molecular ligands. Borr...
متن کاملConical Surfaces and Crescent Singularities in Crumpled Sheets
We analyze the geometry and elasticity of the crescentlike singularity on a crumpled elastic sheet. We give a physical realization of this in terms of a free-boundary contact problem. An analytical solution is given for the universal shape of a developable cone that characterizes the singularity far from the tip, and some of its predictions are qualitatively verified experimentally. We also giv...
