Exponential-time approximation of weighted set cover

چکیده
The Set Cover problem belongs to a group of hard problems which are neither approximable in polynomial time (at least with a constant factor) nor fixed parameter tractable, under widely believed complexity assumptions. In recent years, many researchers design exact exponential-time algorithms for problems of that kind. The goal is getting the time complexity still of order O(c), but with the constant c as small as possible. In this work we extend this line of research and we investigate whether the constant c can be made even smaller when one allows constant factor approximation. In fact, we describe a kind of approximation schemes — trade-offs between approximation factor and the time complexity. We use general transformations from exponentialtime exact algorithms to approximations that are faster but still exponential-time. For example, we show that for any reduction rate r, one can transform any O∗(cn)-time1 algorithm for Set Cover into a (1+ln r)-approximation algorithm running in time O∗(cn/r). We believe that results of that kind extend the applicability of exact algorithms for NPhard problems.

PTAS for Weighted Set Cover on Unit Squares
We study the planar version of Minimum-Weight Set Cover, where one has to cover a given set of points with a minimum-weight subset of a given set of planar objects. For the unit-weight case, one PTAS (on disks) is known. For arbitrary weights however, the problem appears much harder, and in particular no PTASs are known. We present the first PTAS for Weighted Geometric Set Cover on planar objec...
متن کاملDistributed Vertex Cover in Network Graphs
Vertex cover, a minimal set of nodes to cover all edges in a graph, is an abstraction of coverage problems in sensor networks, transportation networks, etc, and is a well-konwn NP-hard problem. Minimum weighted vertex cover (MWVC) problem asks for further minimizing the cumulative weight of a vertex cover. We present new distributed k-hop algorithms for MWVC problem with theoretical and practic...
متن کاملEdge-Dominating Set Problem
We study the approximability of the weighted edge-dominating set problem. Although even the unweighted case is NP-Complete, in this case a solution of size at most twice the minimum can be efficiently computed due to its close relationship with minimum maximal matching; however, in the weighted case such a nice relationship is not known to exist. In this paper, after showing that weighted edge ...
متن کاملTighter inapproximability for set cover
Set Cover is a classic NP-hard problem; as shown by Slav́ık (1997) the greedy algorithm gives an approximation ratio of lnn− ln lnn+Θ(1). A series of works by Lund & Yannakakis (1994), Feige (1998), Moshkovitz (2015) have shown that, under the assumption P 6= NP , it is impossible to obtain a polynomial-time approximation ratio with approximation ratio (1 − α) lnn, for any constant α > 0. In thi...

A is a polynomial time learning algorithm for learning monomials using monomials, and can tolerate a malicious error rate of = r(n) , then there is a polynomial time algorithm A 0 for set cover that nds a weighted cover with cost at most 4r(n) times the optimal cost, where n is the number of sets. Proof: We will give a reduction showing how algorithm A can be used as a subroutine to obtain the ...
