Parameterising competing zooplankton for survival in plankton functional type models

چکیده
32 33 Marine plankton ecosystems are an important component of biogeochemical cycling in the oceans. 34 Operational plankton functional type (PFT) models, that group plankton according to their 35 biogeochemical properties, are currently being developed to resolve biogenic gas exchange between 36 the ocean and atmosphere, and to model the lowest trophic levels in fisheries models. A 37 fundamental problem with these models is that PFTs often go extinct in computer simulations, 38 effectively removing the biogeochemical processes from the models. Cropp and Norbury (Journal 39 of Plankton Research, 31: 939-963) demonstrated that parameter combinations that allowed all 40 PFTs to stay extant for all time in stable, homogeneous environments were rare in a PFT model 41 with two competing phytoplankton and one zooplankton (NP1P2Z). In this paper, we examine the 42 dynamical properties of a generic predator-predator-prey PFT model, and apply the analysis 43 techniques developed by Cropp and Norbury to a simple example PFT model with one 44 phytoplankton and two zooplankton (NPZ1Z2) in order to explore its properties and parameter 45 space. We find that the properties of predator-predator-prey PFT systems are fundamentally 46 different from those of predator-prey-prey PFT systems. The likelihood of parameter combinations 47 for which all PFTs stay extant for all time in predator-prey-prey PFT systems depends critically on 48 the process formulations used, while the properties of co-existing zooplankton (as defined by their 49 parameter values) are quite different to those of co-existing phytoplankton. 50 51 52

Emergence of Holling type III zooplankton functional response: bringing together field evidence and mathematical modelling.
Food-web population models are rather sensitive to parameterization of functional response in predation terms. Theoretical studies predict enhancing of ecosystems' stability for a functional response of sigmoid type (Holling type III). The choice of a correct type of response is especially important for modelling outcome of grazing control of algal blooms by zooplankton in nutrient-rich ecosyst...
متن کاملComparison of Random Survival Forests for Competing Risks and Regression Models in Determining Mortality Risk Factors in Breast Cancer Patients in Mahdieh Center, Hamedan, Iran
Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. Patients with cancer may die due to disease progression or other types of events. These different event types are called competing risks. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the survival of patients with breast cancer using three different approaches: cause-specific hazards regression, subdistri...
متن کاملAnalysis of Plankton Populations
I use numerical and analytical techniques to study the dynamics of various models of plankton food webs with and without resource fluctuations. Plankton are ideal organisms because they are very small, fast-reproducing organisms so they can easily be used in laboratory experiments to verify any results. We can study simple food webs to develop a better understanding of more complex food webs. T...
متن کاملTowards resolving the paradox of enrichment: the impact of zooplankton vertical migrations on plankton systems stability.
Eutrophication, often resulting from human activity, is a serious threat to aquatic communities. Theoretical analysis of this phenomenon, based on conceptual mathematical models, leads to controversial predictions known as Rosenzweig's paradox of enrichment. At the same time, field observations demonstrate that real plankton communities exhibit various mechanisms of self-regulation which can bu...
متن کاملConditions for patchiness in plankton models.
Plankton patchiness in homogeneous physical environments is studied in this paper assuming that all involved populations disperse diffusively. A recent but powerful sufficient condition for the emergence of spatial patterns in models with any number of species is systematically applied to all food chain and food web plankton models and the result is rather sharp: all models explicitly containin...
