Tapering of the cervical spinal canal in patients with distended or non-distended syringes secondary to Chiari malformation type I

چکیده
Methods and materials Seventy-seven patients were divided into two groups based on the syrinx/cord (S/C) ratio: one with distended syrinx (S/C ratio > 0.5) and the other with non-distended syrinx (S/C ratio < 0.5). Anteroposterior diameter of the spinal canal was measured at each cervical level on midsagittal T2-weighted MR images, and a linear trend line was ft by least-square regression to calculate the taper ratio. With the Kruskal-Wallis test, taper ratios were compared between the two groups and further evaluated with respect to age and gender.

Tapering of the cervical spinal canal in patients with distended or nondistended syringes secondary to Chiari type I malformation.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Steeper tapering of the cervical spinal canal as documented in recent studies is thought to have a role in the pathophysiology of Chiari malformation-associated syringomyelia. This study aimed to determine whether taper ratio of the cervical spinal canal differs between patients with distended and nondistended syringes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-seven adolescents (1...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Upper cervical spinal canal dimension may have a role in abnormal CSF dynamics in patients with Chiari I malformation. We attempted to measure spinal canal tapering from anteroposterior spinal canal dimensions in patients with Chiari I. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-one patients with Chiari I malformation, including 12 with syringomyelia and 7 patients with IS were ident...
متن کاملTapering of the cervical spinal canal in patients with scoliosis with and without the Chiari I malformation.
BACKGROUND Cervical spinal canal tapering may increase CSF velocities and pressures. One report suggests that the cervical spinal canal tapers more steeply in patients with Chiari I than in healthy subjects. The goal of this study was to test the conclusion by measuring spinal canal tapering in another cohort of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Consecutive patients with scoliosis and MR imagin...
متن کاملFetal syringomyelia
We explored the prevalence of syringomyelia in a series of 113 cases of fetal dysraphism and hindbrain crowding, of gestational age ranging from 17.5 to 34 weeks with the vast majority less than 26 weeks gestational age. We found syringomyelia in 13 cases of Chiari II malformations, 5 cases of Omphalocele/Exostrophy/Imperforate anus/Spinal abnormality (OEIS), 2 cases of Meckel Gruber syndrome a...
متن کاملType I Arnold-Chiari malformation with bronchiectasis, respiratory failure, and sleep disordered breathing: a case report
Arnold Chiari Malformation (ACM) is defined as a condition where part of the cerebellar tissue herniates into the cervical canal toward the medulla and spinal cord resulting in a number of clinical manifestations. Type I ACM consists of variable displacement of the medulla throughout the formamen magnum into the cervical canal, with prominent cerebellar herniation.Type I ACM is characterized by...
