چکیده

SUMMARY We consider a Leray model with a deconvolution-based indicator function for the simulation of incompressible fluid flow at moderately large Reynolds number (in the range of few thousand) with under-resolved meshes. For the implementation of the model, we adopt a three-step algorithm called evolve-filter-relax (EFR) that requires (i) the solution of a Navier-Stokes problem, (ii) the solution of a Stokes-like problem to filter the Navier-Stokes velocity field, and (iii) a final relaxation step. We take advantage of a reformulation of the EFR algorithm as an operator splitting method to analyze the impact of the filter on the final solution vs a direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. In addition, we provide some direction for tuning the parameters involved in the model based on physical and numerical arguments. Our approach is validated against experimental data for fluid flow in an idealized medical device (consisting of a conical convergent, a narrow throat, and a sudden expansion, as recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration). Numerical results are in good quantitative agreement with the measured axial components of the velocity and pressures for two different flow rates corresponding to turbulent regimes, even for meshes with a mesh size more than 40 times larger than the smallest turbulent scale. After several numerical experiments, we perform a preliminary sensitivity analysis of the computed solution to the parameters involved in the model.

Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Channel Flows by the Rational LES Model

The rational large eddy simulation (RLES) model is applied to turbulent channel flows. This approximate deconvolution model is based on a rational (subdiagonal Padé) approximation of the Fourier transform of the Gaussian filter and is proposed as an alternative to the gradient (also known as the nonlinear or tensor-diffusivity) model. We used a spectral element code to perform large eddy simula...

Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing Preprint Seria ILU preconditioners for non-symmetric saddle point matrices with application to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

Motivated by the numerical solution of the linearized incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, we study threshold incomplete LU factorizations for non-symmetric saddle point matrices. The resulting preconditioners are used to accelerate the convergence of a Krylov subspace method applied to finite element discretizations of fluid dynamics problems in three space dimensions. The paper presents an...

Conditions at the Downstream Boundary for Simulations of Viscous, Incompressible Flow

The proper specification of boundary conditions at artificial boundaries for the simulation of time-dependent fluid flows has long been a matter of controversy. In this work we apply the general theory of asymptotic boundary conditions for dissipative waves, developed by the author in [8], to the design of simple, accurate conditions at a downstream boundary for incompressible flows. For Reynol...
