Mustard's Introduction to Public Health

چکیده
changing metabolic roles of the individual tissues. Most of this chapter is directed towards the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase since this has been the most widely studied and much is known about its development and evolution. Chapter 8 discusses isozymes occurring in insects, plants and lower organisms and is mainly concerned with genetic variations of a variety of enzymes. Chapter 9 is an excellent coverage of the role of isozymes in clinical biochemistry. The authors are specialists in this field and speak with authority on the subject. The last chapter lists technical methods utilized in demonstrating enzyme multiple forms and should provide newcomers to the field ample information and references. My overall impression of the book: very interesting and informative reading to newcomers to the field and to clinicians, but hardly an authoritative up-to-date account of the role of isozymes in biology and medicine. I would recommend to readers of this book that it be supplemented with more recent reviews on isozymes, namely: "Multiple Molecular Forms of Enzymes," Ann. N. Y. Acad. Sci., 151 (1968) Art. 1 and "Molecular Varieties of Isozymes" by C. L. Markert and G. S. Whitt, Experentia, 24 (1968), 977.

INTRODUCTION A patient with D-TGA and surgical repair (Mustard's procedure) presented with appropriate ICD shocks due to monomorphic ventricular tachycardia, refractory to antiarrhythmic medications. METHODS AND RESULTS The patient underwent an electrophysiological study and catheter ablation for the VT. Substrate and pace mapping techniques, with the help of an electroanatomical mapping syst...
متن کاملProtein-losing enteropathy caused by baffle obstruction after Mustard's operation.
Three patients developed protein-losing enteropathy caused by intra-atrial obstruction of the systemic venous return after Mustard's operation. The enteropathy resolved in one case after reoperation and in the others after balloon dilatation of the stenosed caval pathways. Protein-losing enteropathy may occur as a complication of Mustard's operation. Balloon dilatation of the obstructed baffle ...
متن کاملLate development of pulmonary venous obstruction following Mustard's operation using a dacron baffle.
Three patients developed late pulmonary vein obstruction (PVO) following Mustard's operation for transposition of the great arteries. In all three the absence of PVO had been documented by an earlier postoperative cardiac catheterization. At reoperation shrinkage and kinking of the dacron baffle was evident. After Mustard's operation, patients should be observed closely for symptoms and signs o...
متن کاملAssessment of right ventricular function during supine bicycle exercise after Mustard's operation.
Right ventricular (RV) performance during supine bicycle exercise was evaluated by gated equilibrium nuclear angiography in 19 clinically well children with d-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA), 6.4 +/- 2.7 years after Mustard's operation. Comparisons were made between rest and peak exercise. The mean resting ejection fraction was 44 +/- 12% (range 30-75%) and was unchanged at peak exe...
