چکیده

We describe a computational framework for modeling and managing turn-taking in openworld spoken dialog systems. We present a representation and methodology for tracking the conversational dynamics in multiparty interactions, making floor control decisions, and rendering these decisions into appropriate behaviors. We show how the approach enables an embodied conversational agent to participate in multiparty interactions, and to handle a diversity of natural turn-taking phenomena, including multiparty floor management, barge-ins, restarts, and continuations. Finally, we discuss results and lessons learned from experiments.

Take or Wait? Learning Turn-Taking from Multiparty Data

We build turn-taking models for autonomous characters in language-based interactions with small groups of children. Two models explore the use of support vector machines given the same multimodal features, but different methods for collecting turn-taking labels.

Multiparty Turn Taking in Situated Dialog: Study, Lessons, and Directions

We report on an empirical study of a multiparty turn-taking model for physically situated spoken dialog systems. We present subjective and objective performance measures that show how the model, supported with a basic set of sensory competencies and turn-taking policies, can enable interactions with multiple participants in a collaborative task setting. The analysis brings to the fore several p...

Computational models of social and emotional turn-taking for embodied conversational agents: a review

The emotional involvement of participants in a conversation not only shows in the words they speak and in the way they speak and gesture but also in their turn-taking behavior. This paper reviews research into computational models of embodied conversational agents. We focus on models for turn-taking management and (social) emotions. We are particularly interested in how in these models emotions...

An Integrated Computational Model of Multiparty Electoral Competition

Most theoretic models of multiparty electoral competition make the assumption that party leaders are motivated to maximize their vote share or seat share. In plurality-rule systems this is a sensible assumption. However, in proportional representation systems, this assumption is questionable since the ability to make public policy is not strictly increasing in vote shares or seat shares. We pre...

Respiratory belts and whistles

In this talk we will discuss to what extent breathing kinematics can be used as a cue to turn-taking behaviour in spontaneous multiparty conversation. We improve on existing accounts by considering all possible transitions between speaker states (silent, speaking, backchanneling) and by not relying on global speaker models. Instead, all features (including breathing range and resting expiratory...
