Density fluctuations in many-body systems

چکیده
The characterization of density fluctuations in systems of interacting particles is of fundamental importance in the physical sciences. We present a formalism for studying local density fluctuations in two special subvolumes ~centered around either a reference particle or some arbitrary point in the system! termed particle and void regions, respectively. We present formal expressions for the probability, as well as the moments, associated with finding exactly n particles inside of either of these subvolumes. Furthermore, we derive the relationship between the probability functions and closely related quantities of interest, such as the nth nearestneighbor distribution functions and the n-particle conditional pair distribution functions associated with each region. We solve for these quantities exactly in the one-dimensional hard-rod system. The methods developed for studying the hard-rod fluid are applicable for studying a wide class of one-dimensional systems. @S1063-651X~98!06012-7#

Non-ergodic transitions in many-body Langevin systems: a method of dynamical system reduction
We study a non-ergodic transition in a many-body Langevin system. We first derive an equation for the two-point time correlation function of density fluctuations, ignoring the contributions of the thirdand fourth-order cummulants. For this equation, with the average density fixed, we find that there is a critical temperature at which the qualitative nature of the trajectories around the trivial...
متن کاملWave function structure in two-body random matrix ensembles
We study the structure of eigenstates in two-body interaction random matrix ensembles and find significant deviations from random matrix theory expectations. The deviations are most prominent in the tails of the spectral density and indicate localization of the eigenstates in Fock space. Using ideas related to scar theory we derive an analytical formula that relates fluctuations in wave functio...
متن کاملDynamical Scaling of Matter Density Correlations in the Universe . An Application of the Dynamical Renormalization Group
We show how the interplay of non–linear dynamics, self–gravity, and fluctuations leads to self–affine behavior of matter density correlations quite generically, i.e., with a power law exponent whose value does not depend in a very direct way on the specific details of the dynamics. This we do by means of the Renormalization Group, a powerful analytical tool for extracting asymptotic behavior of...
متن کاملSuppression of density fluctuations in a quantum degenerate Fermi gas.
We study density profiles of an ideal Fermi gas and observe Pauli suppression of density fluctuations (atom shot noise) for cold clouds deep in the quantum degenerate regime. Strong suppression is observed for probe volumes containing more than 10 000 atoms. Measuring the level of suppression provides sensitive thermometry at low temperatures. After this method of sensitive noise measurements h...
متن کاملThe Lee-Yang Theory of Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions
In this work we seek a mathematical understanding of phase transitions in the steady state of stochastic many-body systems. Systems at equilibrium with their environment provide examples of such steady states, and the mechanisms underlying equilibrium phase transitions are long known and understood. Experimentally, one can distinguish between two types of transition: the first-order transition ...
