چکیده

We use the Véron-Cetty & Véron (2000) catalog (VV) of 13 213 quasars to investigate their possible physical grouping over angular scales 10′′ ≤ ∆θ ≤ 1000′′. We first estimate the number of quasar pairs that would be expected in VV assuming a random distribution for the quasar positions and taking into account observational selection effects affecting heterogeneous catalogs. We find in VV a statistically significant (>3σ) excess of pairs of quasars with similar redshifts (∆z ≤ 0.01) and angular separations in the 50′′−100′′ range, corresponding to projected linear separations (0.2−0.5) Mpc/h75(ΩM = 1,ΩΛ = 0) or (0.4−0.7) Mpc/h75(ΩM = 0.3,ΩΛ = 0.7). There is also some excess in the 100′′−600′′ range corresponding to (1−5) Mpc in projected linear separations. If most of these quasar pairs do indeed belong to large physical entities, these separations must represent the inner scales of huge mass concentrations (cf. galaxy clusters or superclusters) at high redshifts; but it is not excluded that some of the pairs may actually consist of multiple quasar images produced by gravitational lensing. Of course, a fraction of these pairs could also arise due to random projections of quasars on the sky. The list of 11 pairs of quasars with redshift differences ∆z ≤ 0.02 and angular separations 50′′ ≤ ∆θ ≤ 100′′ is presented in order to stimulate further observational studies and to better understand the astrophysical and cosmological significance of these interesting objects.

A Geometrical Test of the Cosmological Energy Contents Using the Lyman-alpha Forest

In this Letter we explore a version of the test of cosmological geometry proposed by Alcock & Paczyński (1979), using observations of the Lyman-α forest in the spectra of close quasar pairs. By comparing the correlations in absorption in one quasar spectrum with correlations between the spectra of neighboring quasars one can determine the relation of the redshift distance scale to the angle dis...

How many arcminute - separation lenses are expected in the 2 dF QSO survey ?

Wide separation lensing statistics offer information about the density profile and abundance of dark halos. Recently a possible discovery of six quasar pairs, which may be lensed multiple images, was reported by Miller et al. (2002). These pairs are selected from a catalog of the 2dF quasar (QSO) survey comprising 22163 quasars. We calculate expected numbers of lensed quasars taking account of ...

Why Quasar Pairs Are Binary Quasars And Not Gravitational Lenses

We use simple comparisons of the optical and radio properties of the wide separation (3 < < 10) quasar pairs to demonstrate that they are binary quasars rather than gravitational lenses. The most likely model is that all the pairs are binary quasars, with a one-sided 2{ (1{ ) upper limit of 22% (8%) on the lens fraction. Simple models for the expected enhancement of quasar activity during galax...

Double Quasars: Probes of Black Hole Scaling Relationships and Merger Scenarios

We analyze the available sample of double quasars, and investigate their physical properties. Our sample comprises 85 pairs, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We derive physical parameters for the engine and the host, and model the dynamical evolution of the pair. First, we compare different scaling relationships between massive black holes and their hosts (bulge mass, velocity...

Binary Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Evidence for Excess Clustering on Small Scales

We present a sample of 218 new quasar pairs with proper transverse separations Rprop < 1 h −1 Mpc over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 3.0, discovered from an extensive follow up campaign to find companions around the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF Quasar Redshift Survey quasars. This sample includes 26 new binary quasars with separations Rprop < 50 h −1 kpc (θ < 10), more than doubling the numb...
