The effect of early bilingualism on perceived foreign accent

چکیده
High degree of between-rater variability in pronunciation assessment is often reported in literature. However, human assessments of pronunciation skills of second language (L2) learners are used in standardized languageproficiency tests. Besides, these scores are used as a reference point in evaluating computer-based systems for pronunciation teaching and testing. Therefore it is important to be aware of rater-related factors that might affect the degree of perceived foreign accent in L2 speech. We used Cronbach’s alpha and inter-class coefficient to estimate the between-rater agreement of 10 native English speakers who assessed accentedness in L2 utterances. We found that early immersion into bilingual environment might affect the degree of perceived foreign accent. This finding can be explained by interaction of two linguistic systems in early language acquisition, when phoneme prototypes are formed based on language-specific fine phonetic details.

Global Foreign Accent in Native German Speech
The results of this study suggest that German monolingual listeners were more likely to perceive a global foreign accent in the native German speech of consecutive bilinguals in Anglophone Canada and the Dutch Netherlands than in the speech of a control group of monolingual Germans in Germany. The results furthermore suggest that contact with the native German language may have a more significa...
متن کاملBilingual and monolingual children prefer native-accented speakers
Adults and young children prefer to affiliate with some individuals rather than others. Studies have shown that monolingual children show in-group biases for individuals who speak their native language without a foreign accent (Kinzler et al., 2007). Some studies have suggested that bilingual children are less influenced than monolinguals by language variety when attributing personality traits ...
متن کاملEffects of Rater's Attention on the Perceived Degree of Foreign Accent
The present study examined how native English speakers in Canada assessed the degree of foreign accent in nonnative speech when they were required to focus on the content of an utterance. The native English listeners were asked to listen to English sentences produced by speakers of Japanese, Mandarin, and Tamil, and to rate their foreign accent on a 9-point scale in two different rating tasks. ...

The current study, therefore, aimed at investigating the effect of bilingualism on Iranian EFL learners' multiple intelligences (MI) across gender. To this end, 80 EFL learners, in...
متن کاملNative speakers’ perceptions of fluency and accent in L2 speech
Oral fluency and foreign accent distinguish L2 from L1 speech production. In language testing practices, both fluency and accent are usually assessed by raters. This study investigates what exactly native raters of fluency and accent take into account when judging L2. Our aim is to explore the relationship between objectively measured temporal, segmental and suprasegmental properties of speech ...
