چکیده

Aims. We aim to investigate the nature of the high energy source KS 1741−293 by revisiting the radio and infrared associations proposed in the early 1990s. Methods. Our work is mostly based on the analysis of modern survey and archive data, including the NRAO, MSX, 2MASS and Chandra archives, and catalogues. We also have obtained deep CCD optical observations by ourselves. Results. The coincidence of KS 1741−293 with an extended radio and far-infrared source, tentatively suggested in 1994, is no longer supported by modern observational data. Instead, a Chandra source is the only peculiar object found to be consistent with all high-energy error circles of KS 1741−293 and we propose it to be its most likely X-ray counterpart. We also report the existence of a non-thermal radio nebula in the vicinity of the KS 1741−293 position with the appearance of a supernova remnant. The possibility of being associated to this X-ray binary is discussed.

TWO RAPIDLY VARIABLE GALACTIC X-RAY TRANSIENTS OBSERVED WITH Chandra , XMM AND Suzaku

We have identified two moderately bright, rapidly variable transients in new and archival X-ray data near the Galactic center. Both objects show strong, flaring variability on timescales of tens to thousands of seconds, evidence of NH variability, and hard spectra. XMMU J174445.5-295044 is seen at 2-10 keV fluxes of 3 × 10 to < 10 ergs cm s, with NH at or above 5 × 10 22 cm, by XMM, Chandra , a...

The Detection of Variability from the Candidate Ir Counterpart to the Anomalous X–ray Pulsar

We report on the detection of variability from the proposed IR counterpart to the Anomalous X–ray Pulsar (AXP) 1E 1048.1−5937 based on Chandra and ESO optical/IR deep observations carried out in 2001–2002. Within the narrow Chandra uncertainty region for 1E 1048.1−5937 we found only one relatively faint (J=22.1±0.3, J– Ks=2.4) source, while the recently proposed IR counterpart was not detected ...

The quasi-persistent neutron star soft X-ray transient 1M 1716−315 in quiescence

We report on our analysis of a 20 ks Chandra X-ray observation of the quasi-persistent neutron star soft X-ray transient (SXT) 1M 1716−315 in quiescence. Only one source was detected in the HEAO-1 error region. Its luminosity is 1.6 × 1032–1.3 × 1033 erg s−1. In this, the range is dominated by the uncertainty in the source distance. The source spectrum is well described by an absorbed soft spec...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS The Infrared Counterpart of the X-ray Burster KS

We present JK ′ infrared images of the X-ray transient KS 1731–260, obtained in 1997 and in 1998 with IRAC2b at the ESO/MPI 2.2-m telescope at La Silla. Using as a reference the recent Chandra position, we confirm the identification of the X-ray source with the previously proposed counterpart (Wijnands et al. 2001b), for which we measure J = 17.32 ± 0.2 and K ′ = 16.36 ± 0.18. The source was en...

N ov 2 00 8 A variable near - infrared counterpart to the neutron - star low - mass X - ray binary 4 U 1705 − 440 1

We report the discovery of a near-infrared (nIR) counterpart to the persistent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1705−440, at a location consistent with its recently determined Chandra X-ray position. The nIR source is highly variable, with Ks-band magnitudes varying between 15.2 and 17.3 and additional Jand H-band observations revealing color variations. A comparison with contemporaneous X...
