vinced that a patient need never die simply from high bodily temperature. The way in which 1 have found the bath to answer best is this. A large tub, in which the patient can sit or recline, is filled with water at a temperature of 100? to 103? F. Tlie tub should be filled so that the water reaches the patient's chin. While in the bath care should be taken that cold water or ice, when it can be had, is kept continually applied to the head. The water is then gradually cooled down in the following manner : a jugful of water is taken out of the bath and in its place a jugful of cold water is added. This process is carried on till the water sinks to about 85?, which will generally be found sufficient to have mate-

Understanding Climate Change on the California Coast: Accounting for Extreme Daily Events among Long-Term Trends

The majority of weather station records indicate that surface air temperatures have been warming in California between 1950 and 2005. Temperature data from the mid-1990s to the present were analyzed for stations on California Central Coast near Big Sur (Monterey County) to better understand potential for climate change in this biologically unique region. Results showed that daily temperatures i...

The effectiveness of cooling conditions on temperature of canine EDTA whole blood samples

BACKGROUND Preanalytic factors such as time and temperature can have significant effects on laboratory test results. For example, ammonium concentration will increase 31% in blood samples stored at room temperature for 30 min before centrifugation. To reduce preanalytic error, blood samples may be placed in precooled tubes and chilled on ice or in ice water baths; however, the effectiveness of ...

Olive fruit dry matter and oil accumulation in warm environmental conditions

The present study was carried out during 2007, 2008 and 2009 on 6 olive cultivars to investigate the process of oil and dry matter accumulation in response to warm and dry conditions in Dallaho Olive Research Station of SarpoleZehab, Kermanshah province, Iran. Results showed that oil begins to accumulate in the fruit from July, increases gradually through August and reaches its maximum as the f...

Passive heating following the prematch warm‐up in soccer: examining the time‐course of changes in muscle temperature and contractile function

This study examined changes in muscle temperature, electrically evoked muscle contractile properties, and voluntary power before and after a soccer specific active warm-up and subsequent rest period. Ten amateur soccer players performed two experimental sessions that involved performance of a modified FIFA 11+ soccer specific warm-up, followed by a 12.5-min rest period where participants were r...

Development of a single mode electromagnetic resonant cavity for rewarming of cryopreserved biomaterials.

An electromagnetic (EM) heating system is developed to achieve the rapid and uniform warming of cryopreserved biomaterials. Using the heating system, a rectangular resonant cavity is excited in TE101 mode at frequencies near 434 MHz. In experiments, a spherical phantom of biomaterial with a diameter of 36 mm is placed at the center of the cavity. The phantom is first cooled down to about -80 de...
