The Diverse Nature of Intrinsic Absorbers in AGNs
نویسنده
چکیده
Intrinsic absorbers are significant components of AGN environments that provide valuable information and interesting challenges. We present a very brief (and biased, and sometimes speculative) overview of intrinsic absorbers from the perspective of different absorption line classes. We also discuss ways of addressing and learning from the “problem” of partial coverage of the background light source, with some examples based on new high-resolution rest-frame UV spectra of quasars.

A Galactic Origin for the Local Ionized X-ray Absorbers
Recent Chandra and XMM observations of distant quasars have shown strong local (z ∼ 0) X-ray absorption lines from highly ionized gas, primarily He-like oxygen. The nature of these X-ray absorbers, i.e., whether they are part of the hot gas associated with the Milky Way or part of the intragroup medium in the Local Group, remains a puzzle due to the uncertainties in the distance. We present in ...

Any gaseous material along our line of sight to distant quasars or, more generally, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) will absorb light according to the amounts and range of ions present. Strong absorption lines are common in rest-frame UV spectra of AGNs due to a variety of resonant transitions, for example the HI Lyman series lines (most notably Lyα λ1216) and high-ionization doublets like CIV λλ...

This talk discusses the unified X-ray/UV absorption models in AGN. I will first review the models and discuss how they offer an unique opportunity to probe the near nuclear environment of AGNs. Recently, however, the validity of these models has been questioned by a number of authors. I will discuss these papers and argue that the data/ models presented in them do NOT contradict the unified X-r...
