چکیده
This compendium of papers profiles the views of senior database researchers as they debate what to do next, now that the relational model is well established. The papers are collected here as a public service, since there is no other easy way for readers to get them all. None has ever been published in a widely available journal. It is inappropriate for me to comment here on the papers. To summarize their overall message: • There is pride in the accomplishments of database research. It has made major contributions both to theory and practice. • There is unanimity that current database technology, although a great advance over the past, is inadequate for the demands of current and future business and scientific applications. Consequently, considerable research and experimentation is still needed. • Several research issues recur in each paper: (1) user interfaces and data display, (2) support for complex objects and for data types such as time, image, and geometry, (3) extensible database systems, (4) active databases (rules, constraints, procedures, and triggers), (5) parallel algorithms for dabase processing, (6) algorithms and techniques to store and process very large databases (petabytes), (7) techniques to access heterogeneous databases, and, (8) a generalized transaction model. Whole-Part Relationships in the Object-Relational Databases
Widely accepted view is that the relational data model is not powerful enough for preserving semantics of the aggregation and composition relationships (whole-part relationships in general) in a relational database. Data model that is specified in SQL:2003 standard and used by the Object-Relational Database Management Systems (ORDBMSs) is believed to have better qualities in this regard. The Th...
متن کاملThird-generation Dat Abase System Manifesto
We call the older hierarchical and network systems first generation database systems and refer to the current collection of relational systems as the second generation. In this paper we consider the characteristics that must be satisfied by the next generation of data managers, which we call third generation database systems. Our requirements are collected into three basis tenets along with 13 ...

ions such as inheritance are more naturally represented by graphs than as sets (Levene and Poulovassilis, 1991 [33]; Poulovassilis and Levene, 1994 [34]). (4) Data modellings in object-relational DBMSs still have weaknesses in semantic supports. For example, because the functional data model is the “lowest common denominator” of data models (refer to Section 2.2.3.1), there is lack of semantic ...
متن کاملA UML Profile for Developing Databases that Conform to the Third Manifesto
The Third Manifesto (TTM) presents the principles of a relational database language that is free of deficiencies and ambiguities of SQL. There are database management systems that are created according to TTM. Developers need tools that support the development of databases by using these database management systems. UML is a widely used visual modeling language. It provides built-in extension m...
متن کاملUsing Relational Databases in the Engineering Repository Systems
Repository system can be built on top of the database management system (DBMS). DBMSs that use relational data model are usually not considered powerful enough for this purpose. In this paper, we analyze these claims and conclude that they are caused by the shortages of SQL standard and inadequate implementations of the relational model in the current DBMSs. Problems that are presented in the p...
