چکیده

Purpose – To provide an update on a paper published in 1987 in IJOPM. Design/methodology/approach – Provides an assessment and update of “An agenda for research on the flexibility of manufacturing processes”. Findings – Gerwin’s seminal work added welcome rigor to a concept, manufacturing flexibility, which had gained prominence during the previous decade. Finds that many of Gerwin’s insights have stood the test of time. A number of things have changed since that time, but others have remained much as they were. Machines have become more capable and computer-based controls have improved machine and process flexibility, but the character of that flexibility has remained very much the same. Originality/value – Revisits Gerwin’s conceptualization of manufacturing process flexibility and subsequent progress in understanding it.

Flexible Manufacturing of Continuous Process Enterprises with Large Scale and Multiple Products

Compared with modularized enterprises, continuous Process (CP) enterprises exhibit differing characteristics in manufacturing flexibility. Relative to the vast literature on the flexibility of modularized enterprises, the manufacturing flexibility of CP enterprises has aroused little attention in current literature. In this paper, we develop a new theory to give a reasonable explanation for the...

Flexibility to Manufacturing Process Reengineering for Mass Customization

It is a trend to implement mass customization (MC) to meet customer demands and win the global competition. With mass customization, products can be produced with low cost, high quality, and in time as mass production. To implement MC, today’s manufacturing process should be reengineered. However, it is believed that manufacturing process reengineering (MPR) is a highly risk job. A manufacturin...

Directions of Manufacturing Systems’ Evolution from the Flexibility Level Point of View

Manufacturing flexibility is one of the key determinants of development of modern production systems. The article presents the importance of flexibility factor in the process of manufacturing systems development during the 20 th century. In particular, craft manufacturing, dedicated manufacturing systems (DMS) and flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) were characterized. Finally, actual problems...

Solving a Stochastic Cellular Manufacturing Model by Using Genetic Algorithms

This paper presents a mathematical model for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMSs) solved by genetic algorithms. This model assumes a dynamic production, a stochastic demand, routing flexibility, and machine flexibility. CMS is an application of group technology (GT) for clustering parts and machines by means of their operational and / or apparent form similarity in different aspects ...

The Complementary Effect of Manufacturing Process Modularity and IS Flexibility on Agility in Manufacturing

In the situation of shortened product life cycles, modular product design enables organizations to adapt to unanticipated changes in their environments. This study extends modular systems theory to manufacturing process design and posits that: (i) firms can design their manufacturing processes for the same product into either an integrated or modularized structure, thereby being agile in dynami...
