Prominence perception in and out of context

چکیده
The perception of prosodic prominence is known to be influenced by several distinct factors. In this study, we investigated the role of context, both global and local, in the prominence judgements of naı̈ve listeners. Monolingual English listeners marked where they heard prominence on pairs of twoword phrases (e.g. blue ball, green drum). Stimuli varied in whether or not the first phrase implied a contrastive focus on the second phrase. We found clear evidence of a hierarchy of prominence across pitch accent types: L+H* > H* > !H* > unaccented. Additionally, we found that contrast status only affected prominence markings when the participants were made explicitly aware of the discourse context and were instructed to imagine themselves physically present to observe the conversation. This effect of global context suggests that information structure cannot be reliably interpreted in the absence of an established discourse context. Taken together, these results suggest that naı̈ve listeners are sensitive to prominence differences at levels corresponding to categorical annotations. Perception of a word’s relative prominence was consistently influenced by phonetic and phonological factors, while pragmatic factors (such as contrast-evoking context) required more elaborate plausibility manipulations in order to affect prominence perception.

Metadiscourse Markers Revisited in EFL Context: The Case of Iranian Academic Learners’ Perception of Written Texts
Moving in line with the postulation that metadiscourse (MD) markers help transform a dry and tortuous piece of text into a coherent and reader-friendly one, the researchers in the current study attempted to investigate the effect different metadiscourse markers might have on Iranian EFL learners’ perception of written texts. To this end, 120 undergraduate English students were given three diffe...
متن کاملIn Pursuit of Intercultural Communicative Competence in EFL Context: Exploring Iranian English Teachers’ Perceptions
The current study attempted to cast light on the status quo of Iranian EFL teachers' perceptions of ICC. It further attempted to see if their experience would influence their conceptualizations of ICC. To this end, a total of 100 EFL teachers were asked to complete a questionnaire survey adapted from Han & Song's (2011) study. The results of both quantitative and qualitative analysis revealed a...
متن کاملStatistical Learning of Prosodic Patterns and Reversal of Perceptual Cues for Sentence Prominence
Recent work has proposed that prominence perception in speech could be driven by predictability of prosodic patterns, connecting prominence perception to the concept of statistical learning. In the present study, we tested the predictability hypothesis by conducting a listening test where subjects were first exposed to a 5-minute stream of sentences with a certain proportion of sentence-final w...
متن کاملIndividual Differences in Top-down and Bottom-up Prominence Perception
The perception of prosody, like other aspects of speech perception, relies on a combination of bottom-up and top-down information. In the context of prominence perception, the present study explored the interaction of these two types of cues, and individual variation in their effects on listeners. In a “naïve prosody transcription” task, 120 listeners gave prominence ratings to verbs and object...
