چکیده

The diagnostic applications for EUS have grown tremendously over the last decade. Most of the early development involved the use of EUS for upper GI indications. Until recently the rectal applications of EUS have largely remained unexplored. Several recent publications have demonstrated the usefulness of EUS in the evaluation of rectal diseases.1-3 At our center, there has been a steady increase in the number of patients referred for rectal indications. This review describes rectal endosonographic anatomy, highlights the technical aspects of rectal EUS, and summarizes available data on the major clinical indications for rectal EUS including imaging of perianal fistulas, the evaluation of anal sphincter injuries, and the staging of rectal cancer.

The role of endoscopic ultrasound in the evaluation of rectal cancer

Accurate staging of rectal cancer is essential for selecting patients who can undergo sphincter-preserving surgery. It may also identify patients who could benefit from neoadjuvant therapy. Clinical staging is usually accomplished using a combination of physical examination, CT scanning, MRI and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Transrectal EUS is increasingly being used for locoregional staging of ...

The Clinical Usefulness of Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration and Biopsy for Rectal and Perirectal Lesions

BACKGROUND/AIMS Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and/or biopsy (EUS-FNA/B) have been used to diagnose subepithelial tumors (SETs) and extraluminal lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. Our group previously reported the usefulness of EUS-FNA/B for rectal and perirectal lesions. This study reports our expanded experience with EUS-FNA/B for rectal and perirectal lesions in term...

Application of Endoscopic Ultrasonography in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lower Gastrointestinal Disease

they report new findings on the use of EUS-guided sampling in 30 patients with rectal and perirectal lesions which include the previously reported cases. Surprisingly enough, the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA/FNB was only 67% (20/30) this time, which means that merely 10 accurate diagnoses were obtained after performing 19 additional consecutive procedures. Diagnostic accuracy of subepithelial...

Evaluating rectal tumor staging with magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and endoluminal ultrasound

BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endoluminal ultrasound (EUS), and computed tomography (CT) are commonly used imaging tools to evaluate rectal tumor staging, but there was no recent meta-analysis to define the present role of the 3 tools. Here, we proposed to systematically compare the accuracy of the 3 imaging tools for rectal tumor staging. METHODS We systematically searched dia...

Role of endosonography in rectal lymphoma.

Sir, Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is widely applied in gastric lymphomas: it helps to distinguish lymphoma from carcinoma,1 to detect the degree of loco-regional involvement,1,2 to monitor response to radio-chemotherapy3,4 and to identify a recurrences4 early during follow-up evaluation. EUS could give the same informations when applied to the study of rectal lymphoma. Nevertheless, only fe...
