Integrating Usability Engineering with Software Engineering: a preliminary view on aspects surrounding the topic of usability integration

چکیده
Usability integration is an emergent research topic that introduces both researchers and practitioners to new problems and challenges. These problems appear to stem from different world-views adopted by the participating fields of disciplines and the established organizational settings. Introducing a paradigmatic change can be a difficult task to accomplish in this setting. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Software Engineering (SE) are two fields of disciplines with very different views on how information systems should be developed. HCI focuses on ‘soft’ human related issues and SE focuses on ‘hard’ software related issues regarding the artifact that is to be designed and implemented. The third party is the field of Information Systems Research and it provides perspectives that reach beyond both HCI and SE. Organizational change is elaborated since the most radical suggestions for organizations to start actually producing usable products involves changing the way organizations think and work. In this paper it is suggested that usability integration should be investigated from the perspectives of both participating disciplines with a special focus on organizational context and culture in order to fully capture the aspects surrounding the topic of usability integration. Current literature and research on usability integration appears to focus on the following aspects: paradigmatic differences of HCI and SE, common problems and challenges of usability integration, the unique organizational contexts of integration, the paradigmatic shift from technology driven systems development into user-driven development and organizational change agentry. Developing a framework for integrating usability engineering into the software development process in an academic institution
The integration of usability engineering and software engineering has emerged as a research topic due to the separate evolvement of the fields and the growing concern for product usability. Integration research mainly concentrates on commercial projects, while little is studied on usability integration in academic environments. This paper analyses an academic software development environment as...

Software Engineering (SE) and Usability Engineering (UE) both provide a wide range of elaborated process models to create software solutions. Today, many companies have realized the need for usable products and understood that a systematic and structured approach to usability is as important as the process of software development itself. However, theory and practice still have problems to effic...

The recent success of various Apple products affirms that usability engineering can be a beneficial asset in software product development. But considerable problems exist in integrating usability engineering and software engineering. In this paper, we argue that the technical basis – the disciplines’ artifacts and used tools – are a potential hurdle for integration. Model-driven development (MD...

While this can lead to successful results, it fails to provide a continuous strategy for integration that considers the structural, organizational and operational aspects on equal footing and is adaptable to a variety of established and evolving SE practices. In the last five years, several studies and workshops have highlighted the gap between software design approaches in HCI (Human Computer Interaction) and software engineering. Although the fields are complementary, these studies emphasize that they are not well integrated with each other. Several frameworks have been proposed for integrating HCI and usability techniques into the software develo...
