چکیده

Background information as to the environmental effect of discharges of mercury is provided. The information has justified a programme, outlined in the paper, for reducing mercury in products, waste waters and vented air from chlorine plants using the mercury process. The strict separation of the waste waters and certain technical measures creates possibilities of reducing the discharges effectively. An 80 per cent reduction of the mercury in effluents was achieved, for example, by substituting indirect forced cooling of the hydrogen for the traditional direct cooling and returning the condensate to the head of the amalgam decomposers. The major cause of discharge of mercury with vented air was found to be leaking hot hydrogen in the cell room. Different principles for the polishing of the final effluent and for the removal of mercury from the caustic soda produced are described.

Removal of mercury from chloralkali electrolysis wastewater by a mercury-resistant Pseudomonas putida strain.

A mercury-resistant bacterial strain which is able to reduce ionic mercury to metallic mercury was used to remediate in laboratory columns mercury-containing wastewater produced during electrolytic production of chlorine. Factory effluents from several chloralkali plants in Europe were analyzed, and these effluents contained total mercury concentrations between 1.6 and 7.6 mg/liter and high chl...

Gas Phase Mercury Oxidation by Halogens (Cl, Br, I) in Combustion Effluents: Influence of Operating Conditions

Control of mercury emissions is one of the major challenges faced by power generation in coal burning and incineration plants, due to the increasing emission control regulations in the electricity generating sector. This study focuses on the elimination of mercury from the combustion flue gases via the oxidation of elemental mercury (non-soluble) into its oxidized form (soluble) by the addition...

Bioremediation of saline effluents using Quinoa as a proposed solution to the crisis of shortage of drinking water resources

Background & Aim: The demand for freshwater resources has led scientists to use saline water and effluents. One of the cost-effective methods is the use of salinity-resistant plants to bioremediate saline effluents. Quinoa is a medicinal plant with high nutritional value that can control salinity stress in various ways. The present study was conducted with the aim of examining bioremediation of...

Evaluation of mercury speciation and removal through air pollution control devices of a 190 MW boiler.

Air pollution control devices (APCDs) are installed at coal-fired power plants for air pollutant regulation. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems have the co-benefits of air pollutant and mercury removal. Configuration and operational conditions of APCDs and mercury speciation affect mercury removal efficiently at coal-fired utilities. The Ontario H...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the evaluation of swimming pool chlorination and algicides.

Concentrations of ammonia and the chlorine stabilizer, cyanuric acid, which could be expected in swimming pools decreased the rate of kill by chlorine of the potential pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The effect of cyanuric acid increased as the concentration of chlorine decreased, a fact of significance from a public health view. Quaternary ammonium algcides had little effect on the kill rate...
