Digital Systems Laboratory Series A: Research Reports Priorities and Nonmonotonic Reasoning Priorities and Nonmonotonic Reasoning

چکیده
Many knowledge-based systems use some kind of priorities for controlling their reasoning. In this work, autoepistemic logic is extended with priorities. Priorities are formalized as partial orders of formulae that express that some formulae are preferred to others. Priorities increase the set of conclusions that can be inferred from a set of formulae, because the number of cases where connicts between defaults are left unresolved decreases. A decision procedure for prioritized autoepistemic logic is given in terms of a decision procedure for a classical logic on which the prioritized autoepistemic logic is based. The complexity of the logic is analyzed with respect to the underlying classical logic. When the classical logic is the propositional logic, the decision problems of prioritized autoepistemic logic are located on the third level of the polynomial hierarchy. The results of this work carry to other formalisms as well because of the existence of translations of other formalisms to au-toepistemic logic. Possible application areas are e.g. default logic, logic programs, deductive databases, and theories of diagnosis. It is shown that prioritized autoepistemic logic is in the propositional case more general than other related formalisms like preferred subtheories of Brewka, structured theories of Ryan, and a propositional version of Lifschitz's prioritized circumscription. Simple polynomial-time translations of these formalisms to prioritized au-toepistemic logic are given. Finally, it is demonstrated how automated theorem-proving in prioritized autoepistemic logic beneets from priorities. An algorithm for automated reasoning is given and proved correct.

Knowledge-based systems use forms of reasoning that do not satisfy the mono-tonicity property of classical logical reasoning. Therefore, several nonmonotonic logics have been developed for the investigation of theoretical foundations of knowledge-based systems. This work investigates eecient inference procedures for knowledge representation using the framework of nonmonotonic logics. Recent res...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Reasoning as SAT Search
In this paper we show that there is a direct correspondence between prioritized propositional nonmonotonic reasoning and SAT search. This correspondence leads to two results. First, we can reason eeciently using a SAT oracle. We explore several algorithms for nding models for prioritized propositional circumscriptive theories and show that there are some cases where some of the models can not b...
متن کاملDefeasible Logic with Dynamic Priorities
Defeasible logic is a nonmonotonic reasoning approach based on rules and priorities. Its design supports efficient implementation, and it shows promise to be successfully deployed in applications. So far only static priorities have been used, provided by an external superiority relation. In this paper we show how dynamic priorities can be integrated, where priority information is obtained from ...

The revision and transformation of knowledge is widely recognized as a key issue in knowledge representation and reasoning. Reasons for the importance of this topic are the fact that intelligent systems are gradually developed and refined, and that often the environment of an intelligent system is not static but changes over time. Traditionally belief revision has been concerned with revising f...
