The Microbiology of Turfgrass Soils

چکیده
Most turfgrass managers do not have a strong understanding of turfgrass soils, particularly the biological aspects. Certainly most know that living things, such as worms and insects can reside in soil, but they’re not sure where in the soil they live or what they live on. In fact, it might be safe to assume that most turfgrass managers consider soil to be a mysterious world below the turfgrass canopy. Rarely do turfgrass managers consider soil as something that should be managed as prudently as the turf itself. It is becoming clear, however, that the management of the soil, in particular its biological components, is perhaps as important as the management of the plant for the long-term productivity and health of a turfgrass stand. Most soils below turfgrass stands contain a vast array of living organisms, ranging from the larger macroscopic earthworms and insects, to the microscopic invertebrates, bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, nematodes, algae, and protozoa. The types, numbers, and activities of these organisms directly and indirectly impact on turfgrass health. Most turfgrass managers are familiar with the harmful effects that some microorganisms have on turfgrass health. For example, these damaging microorganisms include fungal, bacterial, and nematode pathogens of turfgrass plants, cyanobacteria—a form of blue-green algae that causes black layer, and green algae that cause surface crusting and plant damage. There are other groups of microorganisms that are indirectly harmful to turfgrass plants. These include pesticide-degrading non-pathogenic and pesticide-resistant pathogenic microorganisms. In nearly all cases, turfgrass managers have developed elaborate management techniques to avoid some of the detrimental effects caused by the activities of these organisms. Despite the presence of harmful microorganisms in turfgrass soils, most soils contain large populations of beneficial microorganisms. These offer the most promise for enhancing turfgrass health and maintaining long-term productive turfgrass stands (Table 1).

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL MICROBIAL ACTIVITIES Microbiology of Turf grass Soil
Turfgrass soils vary considerably in physical and chemical composition. However, regardless of their properties, most contain a vast array of living organisms, ranging from larger creatures such as earthworms and insects, to microscopic invertebrates, bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, yeasts, algae and protozoa. All of these organisms affect turfgrass health in important ways. However, perhaps th...
متن کاملLead forms in urban turfgrass and forest soils as related to organic matter content and pH.
Soil pH may influence speciation and extractability of Pb, depending on type of vegetation in urban soil environments. We investigated the relationship between soil pH and Pb extractability at forest and turf grass sites in Baltimore, Maryland. Our two hypotheses were: (1) due to lower pH values in forest soils, more Pb will be in exchangeable forms in forested than in turfgrass soils and (2) d...
متن کاملChanges in land use driven by urbanization impact nitrogen cycling and the microbial community composition in soils
Transition of populations from rural to urban living causes landscape changes and alters the functionality of soil ecosystems. It is unclear how this urbanization disturbs the microbial ecology of soils and how the disruption influences nitrogen cycling. In this study, microbial communities in turfgrass-grown soils from urban and suburban areas around Xiamen City were compared to microbial comm...

Three palm species common to southern California landscapes were grown and established under mulch treatments. Turfgrass clippings and Eucalyptus sideroxylon mulches increased the growth of king and queen palms and increased survival of king palms. Although palms growing under fresh eucalyptus mulches did not display nutrient de®ciency symptoms, Mexican fan palm and queen palm were not signi®ca...
متن کاملImpact of Heavy Metal Stress on In Vitro Seed Germination and Seedling Growth Indices of Two Turfgrass species
Turfgrass is one of the important components of ornamental plant in the construction of parks and landscapes so that the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of type and different concentrations of Copper, Zinc and Cobalt on germination and seedling growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) seeds in in vitro conditions. This study was c...
