The Hydraulic Efficiency of Simple Stormwater Ponds
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics of nine stormwater pond configurations. These ponds represent an extension of earlier work by Persson (1999) who proposed the thirteen pond configurations currently used as a guide in the hydrodynamic component of the Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology (CRCCH) Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation (MUSIC). The hydrodynamic behaviour of each pond has been studied using two-dimensional depth averaged flow simulations (MIKE 21). The hydraulic efficiency of each configuration is also evaluated. The configurations studied in this paper are intended to aid in the conceptual design of stormwater treatment systems such as ponds and wetlands. Outcomes confirm that configurations with the greatest length to width ratio result in the highest hydraulic efficiency. This study also demonstrates that correct positioning of design elements such as islands can significantly enhance the hydraulic characteristics of a pond.

Identifying biogeochemical processes beneath stormwater infiltration ponds in support of a new best management practice for groundwater protection
When applying a stormwater infiltration pond best management practice (BMP) for protecting the quality of underlying groundwater, a common constituent of concern is nitrate. Two stormwater infiltration ponds, the SO and HT ponds, in central Florida, USA, were monitored. A temporal succession of biogeochemical processes was identified beneath the SO pond, including oxygen reduction, denitrificat...
متن کاملUse of Functionalized Filter Media for Nutrient Removal in Stormwater Ponds
Many best-management practices (BMPs) currently used in urban regions have been developed to minimize flood risk, sustain downstream ecosystems, and secure the quality of groundwater sources either directly or indirectly. One such BMP is the reuse of stormwater by removing nutrients from the nutrient-laden “first flush” water collected in wet or dry ponds; this practice has led to the developme...
متن کاملEffect of climate change on stormwater runoff characteristics and treatment efficiencies of stormwater retention ponds: a case study from Denmark using TSS and Cu as indicator pollutants
This study investigated the potential effect of climate changes on stormwater pollution runoff characteristics and the treatment efficiency of a stormwater retention pond in a 95 ha catchment in Denmark. An integrated dynamic stormwater runoff quality and treatment model was used to simulate two scenarios: one representing the current climate and another representing a future climate scenario w...

متن کاملNutrient Reduction in Stormwater Pond Discharge Using a Chamber Upflow Filter and Skimmer (CUFS)
Stormwater runoff is a known pollutant source capable of causing surface water degradation, especially in highly populated areas such as Central Florida. Wet detention ponds manage this stormwater, but most of the ponds do not remove enough nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus, to meet TMDL regulations. This paper presents the use of a Chamber Upflow Filter and Skimmer (CUFS) filled ...
