On Crack Arrest in Ceramic / Metal Assemblies
نویسنده
چکیده
Brittle parts of ceramic/metal assemblies are subjected to a residual stress field generated by the fabrication. During that process, cracks are initiated and the key question is whether they propagate through the whole brittle part. The use of classical probabilistic fracture models applied to the ceramic (i.e., based on a weakest link hypothesis), allow one to conclude that cracks are likely to initiate after the manufacturing process. Consequently, a crack arrest model is proposed, based on a random toughness distribution. Applied to microhardness experiments, the statistical parameters are identified, and the predictive capacity of the model is analyzed. The model is then used to study the reliability of ceramic/metal assemblies during the fabrication stage.

R-curve and strength behavior of a functionally graded material
The effects of loading conditions, specimen size and metal particle size on the crack growth resistance curve (R-curve) and residual strength of a ceramic-metal functionally graded material (FGM) are studied based on the crack-bridging concept. It is found that the FGM exhibits strong R-curve behavior when a crack grows from the ceramic-rich region toward the metal-rich region and the residual ...

Ab~act-The ductile vs brittle behaviour of metal-ceramic interfaces is discussed within an atomistic framework, in which the mechanical response of an interfucial crack is assumed to be ultimately controlled by the competition between atomic decohesion and dislocation nucleation ahead of the crack tip. As in later versions of the Rice-Thomson model, this competition may be evaluated in terms of...

The role of metal layer thickness and resultant plastic constraint in the metal layer during the failure of metal/ceramic layered structures is examined under cyclic and static loading conditions. Crack-growth experiments were conducted on sandwich specimens consisting of 99.999% pure aluminum layers bonded between 99.5% pure polycrystalline alumina with the metal layer thickness varying from 5...
متن کاملModeling of Threshold Strength in Cylindrical Ceramic Structures
Recently, three-dimensional structured ceramic composites with large threshold strengths (i.e., stress below which there is zero probability of failure) have been fabricated utilizing an architecture consisting of relatively stress-free, elongated prismatic domains, separated by thin compressive walls. We build upon prior work on laminate architectures, with the common feature that these struct...
