Individual Differences in the Tourist Wayfinding Decision Making Process

چکیده
Wayfinding is an important aspect that should be considered by tourist park managers when allocating resources and facilities to aid tourists navigating their way through a park. This paper discusses the influence of individual differences such as age, gender, travel group, and familiarity with the environment towards the wayfinding decision making process and physical movement. A case study was conducted where respondents’ movements were traced using GPS receivers to look at the movement patterns and at the end, they were asked to complete a questionnaire particularly to determine the individual differences. The spatial and attribute data were analysed using ESRI ArcGIS Tracking Analyst and ET Geowizards. SPSS 17 were used for statistical purposes. As a result, in terms of decision making, specific landmarks and strategies were noticed for specified age, gender, travel group, and familiarity with the environment. Furthermore, correlations were found between gender and familiarity with the environment with the physical movement such as direction, distance, and arrival time. This paper highlights the need for tourist managers to understand that tourists use different methods of wayfinding and produce different results based on different individual differences and that management should provide complementary materials to assist in wayfinding. * Corresponding author.

Wayfinding characteristics and familiarity indexes in an urban environment
Many people are encountered with finding the best way to reach to their destination. One definition for wayfinding is “the act of travelling to the destination by continuous processes of making route-choices whilst evaluating previous spatial decisions against stable cognition of the environment. General understanding and keen appraisal of the environment can aid decision-making process of how...
متن کاملInfluence of Map Design, Individual Differences, and Environmental Cues on Wayfinding Performance
This exploratory study investigated the effects of map design, individual differences, and environmental cues on wayfinding performance in an outdoor recreational area. Six maps, with three contour representations and two color codes, were used to determine how map design influences wayfinding. Four individual differences: gender, experience in map usage (experience vs. novice), handedness, and...

متن کاملThe Impact of Perception and Wayfinding on Pedestrian Movements
When simulating non-trivial scenarios of pedestrian movements it is necessary to model both the small-scale movements to a visible target (operational level) and the process to find and select routes leading to a possibly non-visible destination (tactical level). A huge number of different approaches modelling the operational level of pedestrian movements are already proposed. However, the majo...
متن کاملCognitive Wayfinding Agents in Public Transportation Networks
Wayfinding Wayfinding is a complex human activity involving moving along while evaluating alternatives and making decisions. It is defined as a spatial problem solving process with the three sub-processes decision-making, decision execution, and information processing. In our research we focus on the information processing aspect of wayfinding. Our main scientific goal is a cognitively plausibl...
