چکیده

Tasks and objects are two predominant ways of specifying distributed problems. A task specifies for each set of processes (which may run concurrently) the valid outputs of the processes. An object specifies the outputs the object may produce when it is accessed sequentially. Each one requires its own implementation notion, to tell when an execution satisfies the specification. For objects linearizability is commonly used, while for tasks implementation notions are less explored. Sequential specifications are very convenient, especially important is the locality property of linearizability, which states that linearizable objects compose for free into a linearizable object. However, most well-known tasks have no sequential specification. Also, tasks have no clear locality property. The paper introduces the notion of interval-sequential object. The corresponding implementation notion of interval-linearizability generalizes linearizability. Interval-linearizability allows to specify any task. However, there are sequential one-shot objects that cannot be expressed as tasks, under the simplest interpretation of a task. The paper also shows that a natural extension of the notion of a task is expressive enough to specify any interval-sequential object.

Specifying Concurrent Problems: Beyond Linearizability

Tasks and objects are two predominant ways of specifying distributed problems. A task is specified by an input/output relation, defining for each set of processes that may run concurrently, and each assignment of inputs to the processes in the set, the valid outputs of the processes. An object is specified by an automaton describing the outputs the object may produce when it is accessed sequent...

Concurrent Sharing through Abstract Data - types : A Case Study

Conventionally, interaction in Parallel and Distributed systems is achieved through the use of either Message Passing or Shared Memory. This paper presents the case for an alternative mechanism supportinghigh-performance sharing in applications; Shared Abstract Data-types (SADTs). An example of the class of SADTs, a highly concurrent FIFO queue, is used to illustrate this approach. It is argued...

Automatic Linearizability Proofs of Concurrent Objects with Cooperating Updates

An execution containing operations performing queries or updating a concurrent object is linearizable w.r.t an abstract implementation (called specification) iff for each operation, one can associate a point in time, called linearization point, such that the execution of the operations in the order of their linearization points can be reproduced by the specification. Finding linearization point...

Normality: A Consistency Condition for Concurrent Objects

Linearizability is a consistency condition for concurrent objects (objects shared by concurrent processes) that exploits the semantics of abstract data types. It provides the illusion that each operation applied by concurrent processes takes eeect instantaneously at some point between the beginning and the end of its execution. When compared with other consistency conditions (such as sequential...

Model Checking Linearizability via Refinement

Linearizability is an important correctness criterion for implementations of concurrent objects. Automatic checking of linearizability is challenging because it requires checking that 1) all executions of concurrent operations be serializable, and 2) the serialized executions be correct with respect to the sequential semantics. This paper describes a new method to automatically check linearizab...
