چکیده

Received January 5, 2000 Abstract Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is a common disease found in early childhood. It commonly presents with vomiting and feeding problems. However, it may involve other systems like respiratory system, growth failure. Twenty-four hours esophageal pH monitoring is a useful technique in diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux. Results of 24 hours esophageal pH monitoring should be correlated with clinical features before and during the procedure. As the conventional esophageal pH monitoring only detects reflux into the distal esophagus, reflux that reach beyond upper esophageal sphincter would not be detected. This so-called extra-esophageal reflux could cause a myriad of upper and lower airway symptoms. To address this problem, a special technique called dual probe esophageal pH monitoring of both distal esophagus and hypopharynx was reported to be useful.

Role of PH Monitoring in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Patients with Voice Disorders

Introduction: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is considered an important cause of voice disorder. We aimed to determine the frequency of LPR in patients with voice disorder and the association between Koufman Reflux Symptom Index (RSI), Reflux Finding Score (RFS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and proximal acid reflux in these patients. Materials and Methods: We performed a prospective...

Esophageal pH and Combined Impedance-pH Monitoring in Children

Esophageal pH monitoring is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease because of the normal ranges across the pediatric age range. However, this method can only detect acid reflux. Multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring has recently been used for the detection of bolus reflux in infants and children. This method allows for the detectio...

Gastroesophageal reflux and asthma in childhood: a study on their relationship using esophageal PH monitoring.

OBJECTIVES This study aims at verifying the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux in asthmatic children, and at determining the sensitivity and specificity of the reflux index for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. METHODS Sixty-nine children, aged 1-5 years, with asthma, were studied by 24-hour pH monitoring. The patients were randomly selected. RESULTS Ages varied from 12.4...

Comparative study of two modes of gastroesophageal reflux measuring: conventional esophageal pH monitoring and wireless pH monitoring.

CONTEXT Esophageal pH monitoring is considered to be the gold standard for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal acid reflux. However, this method is very troublesome and considerably limits the patient's routine activities. Wireless pH monitoring was developed to avoid these restrictions. OBJECTIVE To compare the first 24 hours of the conventional and wireless pH monitoring, positioned 3 cm abov...

Clinical management of infants and children with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux refers to the passage of gastric contents including food, acid, and digestive enzymes up into the esophagus. Reflux is most commonly recognized in infants when it is associated with regurgitation, known as "spitting up," and it is usually a self-limited, benign process that has little or no effect on normal weight gain or development. Adults and adolescents may also have...
