Gape limitation and piscine prey size-selection by yellow perch in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan, with emphasis on two exotic prey items
The trophic linkage between yellow perch Perca flavescens and two exotic prey items, alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and round goby Neogobius melanostomus, was investigated in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan during the summer of 2002. Yellow perch 100mm total length, LT (n1⁄4 1293) exhibited size selective feeding, with 148 fish containing round gobies and 120 fish containing alewives. ...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Trends and Relationships in the Abundance, Growth, and Condition of Common Nearshore Fishes of Southwest Lake Michigan By
The Laurentian Great Lakes are large dynamic aquatic ecosystems with a diversity of available habitats and associated fish communities. The increasing prevalence of invasive species has influenced habitat associations of native species and altered trophic relationships throughout the food webs. We sought to identify habitat and biotic relationships associated with common nearshore fish abundanc...
متن کاملPersistence of Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin type E in tissues from selected freshwater fish species: implications to public health.
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), round gobies (Neogobius melanostomas), yellow walleye (Stizostedion vitreum), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were given Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin type E (BoNT/E) at four doses (0, 800, 1500, and 4000 mouse lethal doses). BoNT/E was sought in the fish tissues at death or at the conclusion of the experiment (10 days after treatment). Fish were divi...
متن کاملFatty acids and fat soluble vitamins content of Black Sea round goby (Neogobius melanostomus, Pallas, 1814) during fishing seasons
The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the seasonal changes in the proximate composition, fatty acids profile and fat soluble vitamins content in spring and autumn goby (Neogobius melanostomus) caught from the Bulgarian Black Sea waters. The proximate composition (moisture, protein and total lipid) has been determined according to AOAC (1990). Analysis of fatty acid methyl e...
متن کاملIndications of competition between non-indigenous round goby and native flounder in the Baltic Sea
The Ponto-Caspian round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) was introduced to the Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea, in the late 1980s, and it has now become the dominant demersal fish species in shallow water. This study aimed to assess diet preferences and the degree of diet overlap between the round goby and the native flounder (Platichthys flesus). Results from time-series of stomach contents a...
