Modal Logics for Qualitative Possibility and Beliefs

چکیده

Possibilistic logic has been proposed as a nu merical formalism for reasoning with uncertainty. There has been interest in developing qualitative accounts of possibility, as well as an explana tion of the relationship between possibility and modal logics. We present two modal logics that can be used to represent and reason with qual itative statements of possibility and necessity. Within this modal framework, we are able to iden tify interesting relationships between possibilis tic logic, beliefs and conditionals. In particular, the most natural conditional definable via possi bilistic means for default reasoning is identical to Pearl's conditional for c:-semantics.

Modal logics for qualitative possibility theory

Possibilistic logic has been proposed as a numerical formalism for reasoning with uncertainty. There has been interest in developing qualitative accounts of possibility, as well as an explanation of the relationship between possibility and modal logics. We present two modal logics that can be used to represent and reason with qualitative statements of possibility and necessity. These logics hav...

A Logic for Reasoning about Justified Uncertain Beliefs

Justification logic originated from the study of the logic of proofs. However, in a more general setting, it may be regarded as a kind of explicit epistemic logic. In such logic, the reasons why a fact is believed are explicitly represented as justification terms. Traditionally, the modeling of uncertain beliefs is crucially important for epistemic reasoning. While graded modal logics interpret...

On Modal Logics for Qualitative Possibility in a Fuzzy Setting

Within the possibilistic approach to uncer tainty modeling, the paper presents a modal logical system to reason about qualitative (comparative) statements of the possibility (and necessity) of fuzzy propositions. We re late this qualitative modal logic to the many valued analogues MVS5 and MVKD45 of the well known modal logics of knowledge and be lief 55 and KD45 respectively. Completeness ...

Using Modal Structures to Represent Extensions to Epistemic Logics

Kripke structures have been proposed as a semantic basis for modal logics of necessity and possibility. They consist of a set of states, informally interpreted as "possible worlds", and a binary accessibility relation between states. The primitive notion of a possible world in this context seems highly intuitive, since necessity can be interpreted as "truth in all possible worlds", and possibil...

Hypothesis Generation in Linear Temporal Logic for Clauses in a Restricted Syntactic Form

Possibility theory and modal logic are two knowledge representation frameworks that share some common features, such as the duality between possibility and necessity, as well as some obvious di↵erences since possibility theory is graded but is not primarily a logical setting. In the last thirty years there have been a series of attempts, reviewed in this paper, for bridging the two frameworks i...
