How to Evaluate the Quality of Airborne Laser Scanning Data
نویسنده
چکیده
The discussion on the quality of digital elevation models form airborne laser scanner was dominated by the proof of vertical and horizontal accuracy. If the accuracy criteria were verified by ground control points, the evidence of high quality was produced. Based on experiences in projects for the Swiss Federal Office of Topography and according to the lidar requirements formulated by the US American Federal Emergency and Mapping Agency (FEMA) the interpretation of quality must change. Six different quality indicators are described as starting point for enhanced specification of laser data sets. Indicators are worthless if they do not contain a level of acceptance; for each indicator a proposal is discussed. With the help of the more precise requirements and specifications the quality evaluation is simplified. A common understanding of the quality between contractual partners is mandatory for efficient and effective lidar projects.

Quality analysis on 3D building models reconstructed from airborne laser scanning data
This paper presents a method to assess the geometric quality of 3D building models. The quality depends on properties of the input data and the processing steps. Insight in the quality of 3D models is important for users to judge whether the models can be used in their specific applications. Without a proper quality description it is likely that the building models are either treated as correct...
متن کاملQuality Assessment of Dtm and Orthophoto Generated by Airborne Laser Scanning System Using Automated Digital Photogrammetry
The approach of using an airborne laser scanning for DTM generation has made great progress recently. However, it is not always clear the reliability and the quality of the geometry that characterise the generated DTM. Thus, a special test was conducted to assess the quality and the reliability of the generated DTM via an airborne laser scanning system. To perform this test, an airborne laser s...
متن کاملImprovements in DTM generation by using full-waveform airborne laser scanning data
Compared to laser radar systems based on the conventional discrete echo approach, direct detection laser radar systems with echo signal digitization and subsequent full-waveform analysis like the RIEGL LMS-Q560 provide valuable additional information on the target’s properties. This additional information can be used in the course of the mandatory processing task of classifying the measurement ...
متن کاملOn the Quality Checking of the Airborne Laser Scanning-based Nation Wide Elevation Model in Finland
Nationwide airborne laser scanning (ALS) has been carried out in European countries such as the Netherlands and Switzerland; in Germany large parts of the country has been scanned and the work is going on as federal basis. The decision makers of national mapping agencies are realizing the benefits of ALS, e.g. significantly improved accuracy, lower processing costs and higher automation, and, t...
متن کاملFull-Waveform Airborne Laser Scanning in Vegetation Studies—A Review of Point Cloud and Waveform Features for Tree Species Classification
In recent years, small-footprint full-waveform airborne laser scanning has become readily available and established for vegetation studies in the fields of forestry, agriculture and urban studies. Independent of the field of application and the derived final product, each study uses features to classify a target object and to assess its characteristics (e.g., tree species). These laser scanning...
