The HelioClim Project: Surface Solar Irradiance Data for Climate Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
Meteosat satellite images are processed to yield values of the incoming surface solar irradiance (SSI), one of the Essential Climate Variables. Two HelioClim databases, HC-1 and HC-3, were constructed covering Europe, Africa and the Atlantic Ocean, and contain daily and monthly means of SSI. The HC-1 database spans from 1985 to 2005; HC-3 began in 2004 and is updated daily. Their quality and limitations in retrieving monthly means of SSI have been studied by a comparison between eleven stations offering long time-series of measurements. A good agreement was observed for each site: bias was less than 10 W/m2 in absolute value (5% in relative value) for HC-3. HC-1 offers a similar quality, though it underestimates the SSI for latitudes greater than 45° and less than −45°. Time-series running from 1985 to date can be created by concatenating the HC-1 and HC-3 values and could help in assessing SSI and its changes.

HelioClim - 3 : a near - real time and long - term surface solar irradiance database
—HelioClim-3 is a database containing surface solar irradiance assessed every 15 min from images taken by the Meteosat series of satellites since 2004. It covers Europe, Africa and Atlantic Ocean. In average, comparison with hourly measurements made in meteorological stations yields a correlation coefficient greater than 0.9, a relative root mean square error (rRMSE) around 20% of the mean meas...

Two databases of solar surface irradiance (SSI) derived from satellites are compared to ground measurements for Algeria, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. It is found that it is possible to accurately derive the SSI from geostationary meteorological satellites, even with a coarse spatial resolution. The two databases HelioClim-1 and SSE exhibit similar and good performances. The bias is lower for SSE t...

The spectral Direct Normal Irradiance (SDNI) is a basic radiometric quantity from which many other quantities can be derived. It provides not only information about the spectral and distribution of the direct solar radiation reaching a particular location. Accurate knowledge about the spectral direct irradiance shall enable us to gain new scientific results in the: determination of cloud effect...

The HelioClim-1 database offers daily means of surface solar irradiance for the period 1985-2005 and has been created from archives of images of the Meteosat First Generation satellites. Expectations of users regarding access to similar data were carefully analyzed, especially regarding dissemination of and access to data, and were taken at the heart of the design of the database. Efforts were ...

The solar radiation reaching the ground level on horizontal surfaces is of paramount importance in many applications, from climate to health (ESRA, 2000), and of course for the production of energy: heat, electricity. This communication deals with the amount of energy received during a day on a surface of 1 m2 located at ground surface and integrated over the whole spectrum of the solar radiati...
