چکیده

This paper reports on the development of an acoustic sea ice thickness measurement sensor. The development is applying acoustic NonDestructive-Testing (NDT) techniques to test first year sea ice including significant amounts of enclosed air bubbles. Two single piezoelectric transducers are tightly placed on smoothed sea ice surface to emit and receive acoustic signals. Besides seeing a detectable reflection from the ice-water interface, the receiving signal also shows significant energy being reflected from entrained air bubbles. Based on the assumption of randomly distributed bubbles, the desired reflection from sea ice-seawater interface can be extracted, through sampling the sea-ice in multiple locations.

Ship-based Sea Ice Observations in Lützow-holm Bay, East Antarctica

The authors conducted the extensive ship-based sea ice observations from December 2000 to February 2001 in Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica. The authors focused on the observations of sea ice thickness in the land fast ice, which provides fundamental information on the unique growth and decay process of the sea ice in this area. The thickness of ice plus snow was measured using a portable Electro-Ma...

Linking Regional Winter Sea Ice Thickness and Surface Roughness to Spring Melt Pond Fraction on Landfast Arctic Sea Ice

The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased strongly in extent, thickness, volume and age in recent decades. The melt season presents a significant challenge for sea ice forecasting due to uncertainty associated with the role of surface melt ponds in ice decay at regional scales. This study quantifies the relationships of spring melt pond fraction (fp) with both winter sea ice roughness and thicknes...

A Study of an Inversion Model for Sea Ice Thickness Retrieval in Ross Island, Antarctica

In this study, an inverse microwave scattering model for sea ice has been developed for the purpose of sea ice thickness retrieval using radar backscatter data. The model is loosely based on the Radiative-Transfer-Thermodynamic Inverse Model for Sea Ice Thickness Retrieval from Time-Series Scattering Data. The developed inverse model is a combination of the Radiative Transfer Theory with Dense ...

Sea Ice Thickness Measurement from an Ice Breaker Using a Stereo Imaging System Consisted of a Pairs of High Definition Video Cameras

Sea ice monitoring is quite important from the global warming point of view. Sea ice thickness is one of the most important parameters for understanding the heat flux of sea ice area. Usually, sea ice thickness is measured by drilling a hole on the sea ice. However, this work does take a lot of time. In order to effectively measure sea ice thickness from an icebreaker deck, in 2000, the authors...

Investigation of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness using Space-borne Polarimetric SAR data

Space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been widely used to produce ice concentration (type), ice motion, ice charting (operational route planning), and iceberg detection. Recent availability of polarimetric SAR sensors (e.g., TerraSAR-X, RADARSAT-2, and ALOS PALSAR) enables us to explore the full potential of polarimetric data to derive sea ice information. Among the many sea ice ...
