Factors affecting phytoplankton extracellular release in the Southern Bight of the North Sea

چکیده

Phytoplankton extracellular release of organic substances was studied in the Southern Bight of the North Sea in relation to changes in growth conditions (light intensity and inorganic nitrogen concentration) and in taxonomic phytoplankton composition. Light intensity had no effect on percent extracellular release (PER). A high negative correlation between PER and mineral nltrogen concentration was found during spring bloom when phytoplankton were dominated by flagellates (Phaeocystis poucheti in the Southern Bight; dinoflagellates in the oligotrophic English Channel). The physiological response of the flagellate populations to shortage of nutrients differed. High PER was measured dunng the decline of the bloom with lower values in ollgotrophic (46 %) than eutrophic waters (70 to 80 %). On the other hand, no significant correlation was found between PER and mineral nitrogen for diatoms which dominate the phytoplankton population outside the spring period. PER values were unchangeably low (0 to 14 %) over a large range of mineral nitrogen concentrations (0 to 50 pg at N I-').

The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the structure of the plankton community in the southwestern Caspian Sea and its relationship with the reduction of Rutilus frisii and Chelon auratus catches. The current study was conducted seasonally in the coasts of Guilan provience from 2020 to 2021. A total number of 48 genera and species of phytoplanktons were identified. Tthe finding...

Gross Excretion Rates of Natural Marine Phytoplankton and Heterotrophic Uptake of Excreted Products in the Southern North Sea, as Determined by Short-Term Kinetics

Phytoplankton extracellular production has been determined kinetically during the spring phytoplankton bloom in three marine biotopes representative of the Southern North Sea (Scheldt estuary, Belgian coast and English Channel), differing greatly in their biological activities. Short-term kinetics of phytoplankton extracellular compounds produced during 14C incubations have been shown to increa...

Features of phytoplankton community in the southern Caspian Sea, a decade after the invasion of Mnemiopsis leidyi

Phytoplankton study has become more significant in the Caspian Sea due to the occurrence of ecological events such as algal blooms and the introduction of the invader species(Ctenophore, Mnemiopsis leidyi). A seasonal study was conducted to investigate the features of phytoplankton community one decade after this invasion in the Iranian coast of Caspian Sea during 2009-2010. According to the re...

Changes in size and form in the dominant phytoplankton species in the southern Caspian Sea

Due to the recent destructive pressures on the Caspian environment, an effect on phytoplankton communities is expected in different aspects such as cell size and form. This paper aims to survey the size and form in the dominant phytoplankton species in the years of 1996, 2001, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012 in the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea. Results of current study showed that the dominant sp...
