The evolution of Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) control after 90 years since Carlos Chagas discovery.

چکیده
Chagas disease is one of the most serious parasitic diseases of Latin America, with a social and economic impact far outweighing the combined effects of other parasitic diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis. Serological data indicate well over 16 million people are infected with the causative agent, Trypanosoma cruzi, with a further 100 million people considered at risk (WHO 1991). The World Bank, in 1993, calculated an annual loss due to Chagas disease of 2,740,000 ‘disability-adjusted life years’ (DALYs), representing an economic loss to the endemic countries of Latin America equivalent to over US$6.5 billion per year (WHO 1997, Schofield & Dias 1999). Control of Chagas disease is now given high priority by Latin American governments, partly because of its high economic impact and consequent financial benefits of effective control (eg. Schofield & Dias 1991, Akhavan 1996, Basombrio et al. 1998) but also because of the technical feasibility of control through the interruption of transmission. In 1991 a major regional initiative to eliminate Chagas disease was launched by the governments of Southern Cone countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay) (cf. Kingman 1991, Schofield & Dias 1999), which has recently been followed by similar initiatives in Andean Pact countries (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela) and Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua) (Schofield & Dujardin 1997, WHO 1997).

Elimination of Chagas disease transmission: perspectives.
One hundred years after its discovery by Carlos Chagas, American trypanosomiasis, or Chagas disease, remains an epidemiologic challenge. Neither a vaccine nor an ideal specific treatment is available for most chronic cases. Therefore, the current strategy for countering Chagas disease consists of preventive actions against the vector and transfusion-transmitted disease. Here, the present challe...
متن کاملEvolution of the clinical and epidemiological knowledge about Chagas disease 90 years after its discovery.
Three different periods may be considered in the evolution of knowledge about the clinical and epidemiological aspects of Chagas disease since its discovery: (a) early period concerning the studies carried out by Carlos Chagas in Lassance with the collaboration of other investigators of the Manguinhos School. At that time the disease was described and the parasite, transmitters and reservoirs w...

Chagas disease (ChD) or American trypanosomiasis since its discovery by Carlos Chagas nearly 100 years ago is the most common cause of myocarditis in South, Central and parts of North America. More than 10 million Latin Americans carry the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, 25 millions of people are at risk to acquire the disease and at least one million of them will die, within a 10 year mo...

The knowledge firstly achieved by Carlos Chagas and his colleagues of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, increased with all those acquired to date, allow us to outline the general scheme (modified from Dias & Coura 1997) of American trypanoso-miasis natural history (Figure). The knowledge of this natural history makes more comprehensible the clinical evolution of the disease, as it will be demonstrate...
متن کاملThe noble enigma: Chagas' nominations for the Nobel prize.
Carlos Chagas, a Brazilian physician, discovered the American trypanosomiasis in 1909. Like other remarkable discoveries of those days, his work helped to articulate the insect-vector theory and other theoretical guidelines in tropical medicine. Unlike all other discoveries, all the stages of this work were accomplished in a few months and by a single man. Chagas' discovery was widely recognize...
