چکیده
The nite-diierence time-domain (FDTD) method is a numerical technique that makes no explicit physical approximations to the underlying problem. The quality of an FDTD-based solution typically is determined by the discretization of the computational domain|the smaller the spacing, the more accurate the solution. Unfortunately, for large computational domains, i.e., ones spanning many wavelengths, the small spatial step size needed to obtain a high-delity solution may lead to a prohibitively large number of unknowns. Here it is shown how the FDTD method can be used to model accurately scattering from pressure-release surfaces above a homogeneous water column. To keep the computational cost manageable, a number of enhancements to the standard FDTD algorithm are employed. These enhancements include correcting for numerical dispersion along the specular direction of the incident insoniication, using locally conformal cells at the pressure-release boundary, and propagating the eld through the homogeneous water column via an analytic method. The accuracy of the FDTD approach is demonstrated by comparison with an integral equation-based reference solution to the same rough surface scattering problem Thorsos, Proceedings of

FDTD Investigation on Electromagnetic Scattering from Two- Dimensional Layered Rough Surfaces
─ This paper presents an investigation into the electromagnetic scattering characteristic of two-dimensional (2-D) layered rough surfaces by using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm, which constitutes a three-dimensional scattering problem. The uniaxial perfectly matched layer medium is adopted for truncation of FDTD lattices, in which the finite-difference equations can be used f...

A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for scattering by one-dimensional, rough fluid–fluid interfaces is presented. Modifications to the traditional FDTD algorithm are implemented which yield greater accuracy at lower computational cost. These modifications include use of a conformal technique, in which the grid conforms locally to the interface, and a correction for the numerical dispe...

The effects of rough surface scattering on the detection and imaging of objects are important in many applications including the imaging of objects on or near ocean surfaces and the detection of objects buried under ground rough surfaces. This paper focuses on the following problems: (1) Scattering from wedge-like rough surfaces representing ocean surfaces with sharp crested waves. (2) Scatteri...

The nite-di erence time domain (FDTD) method provides a simple and accurate means of simulating a wide range of acoustic wave propagation problems. Unfortunately, the method has a voracious appetite for computational resources. For example, to accurately model scattering from a continuously varying pressure-release boundary, an FDTD grid is typically required that has a much ner discretization ...
