چکیده

RESULTS An elevated CRP level (.0.5 mg/dl) was a significant CAD determinant even after adjustment for traditional CAD risk factors (odds ratio [OR] 5 2.4; p 5 0.02). Moreover, CMV seropositivity was significantly associated with increased CRP levels (p 5 0.04 after adjustment for CAD risk factors), suggesting that CMV could evoke a subclinical inflammatory response. However, considerable host variation existed in this response to CMV. When adjusted for CAD risk factors, the OR for CAD were 1.3 in the subgroup with CMV seropositivity alone (p 5 0.7), 2.3 in the subgroup with elevated CRP levels alone (p 5 0.2), and 4.3 in the subgroup with combined CMV seropositivity and elevated CRP levels (p 5 0.01).

Cytomegalovirus Infection and Atherosclerosis: A Systematic Review

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most common infections that affects humans’ cardiovascular system. Although the literature includes controversial evidence for any correlation between CMV infection and arterial atherosclerosis, the majority of studies, especially those with larger patient population and stronger data stand for such a relationship. However, the number of prospective...

Leader Microorganisms in the aetiology of atherosclerosis

Recent publications have suggested that infective pathogens might play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This review focuses on these microorganisms in the process of atherosclerosis. The results of in vitro studies, animal studies, tissue studies, and serological studies will be summarised, followed by an overall conclusion concerning the strength of the association of ...

Scrutinized role of Cytomegalovirus in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis from early life

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a successful ubiquitous virus, its prevalence is more than 60% among adult blood donors, worldwide. Contrary to this old concept, CMV infection is associated with the first leading cause of death among immune-competent hosts. This paradigm is getting stronger by the emergence of growing evidences about the role of CMV in the pathogenesis of various kinds of native and a...

Pathogens and atherosclerosis: update on the potential contribution of multiple infectious organisms to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

It is currently unclear what causes the chronic inflammation within atherosclerotic plaques. One emerging paradigm suggests that infection with bacteria and/or viruses can contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis either via direct infection of vascular cells or via the indirect effects of cytokines or acute phase proteins induced by infection at non-vascular sites. This paradigm has be...

The association of metabolic syndrome and Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus type 1: The Persian Gulf Healthy Heart Study

BACKGROUND The metabolic syndrome together with insulin resistance and their consequences are basic factors in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Chronic infections with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Chlamydia pneumoniae are associated with the development of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. The infectious aspects of metabolic syndrome have not been in...
