چکیده

This paper presents an overview of existing and emerging technologies on electron sources that can service various energy recovering linacs under consideration. Photocathodes that can deliver average currents from 1mA to 1A, the pros and cons associated with these cathodes are addressed. Status of emerging technologies such as secondary emitters, cesiated dispenser cathodes, field and photon assisted field emitters and super lattice photocathodes are also reviewed. r 2005 Elsevier B.V. Progress of Srf Gun Development and Operation at the Elbe Accelerator

Superconducting RF photo guns are suitable candidates for electron injectors in future free-electron lasers and energy recovery linacs. For the radiation source ELBE an SRF gun was build and put into operation. During longterm tests, the operation of normal-conducting photocathodes in the superconducting cavity has been successfully demonstrated. At moderate average currents of some hundreds of...

Degradation of Alkali-Based Photocathodes from Exposure to Residual Gases: A First-Principles Study

Photocathodes are a key component in the production of electron beams in systems such as X-ray freeelectron lasers and X-ray energy-recovery linacs. Alkali-based materials display high quantum efficiency (QE), however, their QE undergoes degradation faster than metal photocathodes even in the high vacuum conditions where they operate. The high reactivity of alkali-based surfaces points to surfa...

High Average Current Effects in Energy Recovery Linacs*

Energy Recovery Linacs (ERLs) can be used as high efficiency driver accelerators to Free Electron Lasers, synchrotron radiation light sources and colliders. Energy recovery has been successfully demonstrated up to 5 mA of average current in the Jefferson Lab 1.7 kW IR FEL. Future designs call for much higher average currents of order 100 mA. A number of phenomena can potentially limit the perfo...

Longitudinal phase space tomography and its implementation in energy recovery linacs

Applying tomographic techniques to study the longitudinal phase space of the electron beam in future energy recovery linacs presents a challenge as it requires nondestructive diagnostics and the manipulations of the phase space are restricted by the energy recovery. The different methods of tomographic reconstruction and previous experiments at the BNL DUV-FEL facility are presented. Different ...

A comparative Monte Carlo study on 6MV photon beam characteristics of Varian 21EX and Elekta SL-25 linacs

Background: Monte Carlo method (MC) has played an important role in design and optimization of medical linacs head and beam modeling. The purpose of this study was to compare photon beam features of two commercial linacs, Varian 21EX and Elekta SL-25 using MCNP4C MC code. Materials and Methods: The 6MV photon beams of Varian 21EX and Elekta Sl-25 linacs were simulated based on manufacturers pro...
