چکیده

We describe an experiment in superconductivity suitable for an advanced undergraduate laboratory. Point-contact spectroscopy is performed by measuring the differential conductance between an electrochemically etched gold tip and a 100-nm superconducting niobium film with a transition temperature Tc ≈ 7 K. By fitting the results to Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory using a finite lifetime of quasiparticles, we obtain a superconducting gap energy ∆ ≈ 1.53 meV, a lower bound to the Fermi velocity vF ≥ 3.1× 10 cm/s, and a BCS coherence length ξ ≈ 43 nm for niobium. These results are in good agreement with previous measurements.

Comparison of multiple flux quantum transition with the corresponding I-U-characteristic using Nb-point contacts

2014 For Superconductor-Superconductor (S-S) point contacts (Nb) a quantitative check is done whether the properties of flux quantum transition into a weakly connected superconducting loop can be predicted from the shape of the corresponding I-U-characteristic. The background is taken from the Resistively Shunted Junction (RSJ)-model using a modified sinusoidal Current-Phase-Relation (CPR). An ...

Resonant Andreev Spectroscopy in normal-Metal/thin-Ferromagnet/Superconductor Device: Theory and Application

We develop a theoretical model to describe the transport properties of normal-metal/thin-ferromagnet/superconductor device. We perform experimental test of the model using a gold tip on PdNi/Nb bilayer. The resonant proximity effect causes conductance features very sensitive to the local ferromagnetic properties, enabling accurate measurement of polarization and thickness of the ferromagnet by ...

Current-injection in a ballistic multiterminal superconductorÕtwo-dimensional electron gas Josephson junction

We study the suppression of the critical current in a multi-terminal superconductor/two-dimensional electron gas/superconductor Josephson junction by means of hot carrier injection. As a superconductor Nb is used, while the two-dimensional electron gas is located in a strained InGaAs/InP heterostructure. Two different modes of injection are employed. First, in the three-terminal injection mode,...

Nb BASED MIXER ELEMENTS FOR MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER WAVELENGTHS

The superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junction is the most sensitive nonlinear element for millimeter-wave heterodyne detection. We have developed a Nb/Al—Al203/Nb junction fabrication process which is compatible with the use of planar tuning circuits integrated with the junctions. Recent results have yielded a double sideband receiver noise temperature less than 50K from 205 to 240...

Suppressed Andreev Reflection at the Normal-Metal / Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5 Interface

In order to probe the order parameter symmetry of the heavy-fermion superconductor (HFS) CeCoIn5, we employ point-contact spectroscopy, where dynamic conductance spectra are taken from a nano-scale junction between a normal-metal (N) Au tip and a single crystal of CeCoIn5. The point-contact junction (PCJ) is formed on a single crystal surface with two crystallographic orientations, (001) and (1...
