Investment and Consumption without Commitment

چکیده
December 8, 2008 Abstract. In this paper, we investigate the Merton portfolio management problem in the context of non-exponential discounting. This gives rise to time-inconsistency of the decision-maker. If the decision-maker at time t = 0 can commit his/her successors, he/she can choose the policy that is optimal from his/her point of view, and constrain the others to abide by it, although they do not see it as optimal for them. If there is no commitment mechanism, one must seek a subgame-perfect equilibrium strategy between the successive decision-makers. In the line of the earlier work by Ekeland and Lazrak [5] we give a precise definition of equilibrium strategies in the context of the portfolio management problem, with finite horizon, we characterize it by a system of partial differential equations, and we show existence in the case when the utility is CRRA and the terminal time T is small. We also investigate the infinite-horizon case and we give two different explicit solutions in the case when the utility is CRRA (in contrast with the case of exponential discount, where there is only one). Some of our results are proved under the assumption that the discount

An Analysis of the Effect of Consumption Spending and Investment on Indonesia’s Economic Growth
This study aims to examine the effect of investment and consumption spending on Indonesia’s economic growth. The data used is the quarterly time series data from the first quarter of year 2003 to the fourth quarter of year 2013, comprising consumption spending, investment and economic growth. For the purpose of analysis, the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model is used. The result of the...
متن کاملThe Investment Model of Commitment Processes
The investment model of commitment processes is rooted in interdependence theory and emerged from the broader scientific zeitgeist of the 1960s and 1970s that sought to understand seemingly irrational persistence in social behavior. The investment model was developed originally to move social psychology beyond focusing only on positive affect in predicting persistence in a close interpersonal r...
متن کاملDynamic Financial Constraints: Distinguishing Mechanism Design from Exogenously Incomplete Regimes∗ **under major revisions**
We formulate and solve a range of dynamic models of constrained credit/insurance that allow for moral hazard, limited commitment and unobservable investment. We compare them to full insurance and exogenously incomplete financial regimes (autarky, saving only, and borrowing and lending in a risk-free asset). We develop computational methods based on mechanism design, linear programming, and maxi...
متن کاملA Longitudinal Test of the Investment Model: The Impact on Job Satisfaction, Job Commitment, and Turnover of Variations in Rewards, Costs, Alternatives, and Investments
A longitudinal study of moderately professionalized technical workers was conducted to test a vanety of investment model (Farrell & Rusbult, 1981) predictions concerning the determinants of job satisfaction, job commitment, and turnover In general, greater job satisfaction resulted from high job rewards and low job costs, whereas strong job commitment was produced by high rewards, low costs, po...

An efficient monetary and tax system plays an important role in the proper performance of the economic system, and can effect on motivation of labor, consumer, savings and investment behavior. A theory of monetary and tax reform is movement of the income tax system and inflation tax to the system of consumption tax, that can increase the tendency to savings, investment and capital accumulation....
متن کاملThe effect of globalization on energy consumption in developing country: Accurate quantitative regression
The present study investigates the effect of globalization on energy consumption in developing countries including Iran for the period 2000 to 2018 in the form of a quantile panel regression approach. For this purpose, the KOF index was used as a globalization variable. The index, KOF, includes real trade flows such as trade, foreign direct investment and portfolio investment, as well as trade ...
