چکیده

In a time of heightened environmental concerns and increased importance on efficiency, thermoacoustic standing waves and oscillations provide a possible solution to many contemporary problems. Elementary standing wave theory is discussed, as well as the connection between thermodynamics and acoustical oscillations. Additionally, the benefits of Sondhauss oscillations and devices for their production are detailed for standing waves. Finally, insight into applications of thermoacoustic resonant tubes, such as engines and refrigerators, as well as other exciting aspects of the topic are covered.

Calculated effects of pressure-driven temperature oscillations on heat exchangers in thermoacoustic devices with and without a stack

A Lagrangian computational method is used to explore the performance of heat exchangers in conditions of oscillating flow and oscillating pressure relevant to thermoacoustic devices. Pressure oscillations cause temperature oscillations within the working gas. Depending on phase, these ‘‘pressure-driven temperature oscillations’’ can enhance or degrade heat transfer within the exchangers of a th...

Simplified Modeling of a Thermo-acousto-electric Engine Forced by an External Sound Source

Introduction Thermoacoustic wave-generators are usually designed and optimized using software tools [1, 2] based on the linear thermoacoustic theory. These tools enable to predict the operating point of a thermoacoustic engine from the balance between the thermoacoustic amplification process and the numerous nonlinear effects saturating wave amplitude growth, the latter effects being very diffi...

Scanned-Wavelength Temperature Sensors for Combustion Instabilities

Motivation Fuel lean combustion is often employed to reduce pollutant emissions (CO, NOx,...) and increase gas turbine lifetime via reduced temperature. However, lean combustion is susceptible to thermoacoustic instabilities and lean blowout (LBO). Thermoacoustic instabilities are due to the coupling of heat release to acoustic oscillations, and lead to reduced combustion efficiency and increas...

Active Control of Thermoacoustic Instability Using a Model-based Approach

Recently, active control has been pursued vigorously for combating thermoacoustic instabilities in the combustion process. While many of the reported experiments, with controllers that include filter components determined by trial and error, have demonstrated that the dominant thermoacoustic instability can be suppressed, often the response contains secondary peaks at other frequencies which we...
