چکیده

The aim of the present study was to determine the antimicrobial resistance trends of respiratory tract pathogens isolated from patients with community-acquired respiratory tract infections (CARTIs) in Crete, Greece, over a 4-year period (2009-2012). A total of 588 community-acquired respiratory pathogens were isolated during the study period. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common organism responsible for 44.4% of CARTIs, followed by Haemophilus influenzae (44.2%) and Moraxella catarrhalis (11.4%). Among S. pneumoniae, the prevalence of isolates with intermediate- and high-level resistance to penicillin was 27.2% and 12.3%, respectively. Macrolide resistance slightly decreased from 29.4% over the period 2009-2010 to 28.8% over the period 2011-2012. Multiresistance was observed among 56 (54.4%) penicillin nonsusceptible isolates. A nonsignificant increase in resistance of H. influenzae isolates was noted for β -lactams, cotrimoxazole, and tetracycline. Among the 67 M. catarrhalis tested, 32 produced beta-lactamase and were resistant to ampicillin. Macrolide resistance decreased over the study period. All isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, chloramphenicol, rifampicin, and the fluoroquinolones. Although a decreasing trend in the prevalence of resistance of the three most common pathogens involved in CARTIs was noted, continuous surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility at the local and national level remains important, in order to guide appropriate empirical antimicrobial therapy.

An Overview of Community-acquired Respiratory Tract Infections

Community-acquired respiratory tract infections continue to be among the most common and important infections seen by practicing clinicians. These infections not surprisingly have some common aspects in regards to the microbes involved as well as their pathogenesis and typically involve the sinuses, the airways, and the lungs. Acute respiratory tract infections can be caused by a wide variety o...

A Survey On Urinary Pathogens And Their Antimicrobial Susceptibility Among Patients With Significant Bacteriuria

Background and Objective: Urinary tract infection (UTIs) is one of the most common diagnosed infectious diseases. In order to determine the spectrum of bacterial etiology and antibiotic resistance pattern of the uropathogens that cause community acquired UTI, a retrospective study was performed in Research Center of Reference laboratories of Iran on urine samples of referred patients during ...

Increased antibiotic resistance in respiratory tract pathogens: PROTEKT US--an update.

Three major North American surveillance programs have tracked antimicrobial resistance patterns among isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae and other common respiratory tract pathogens. The Canadian Bacterial Surveillance Network shows the progressive increase in resistance among pneumococcal S. pneumoniae to penicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones. The data f...

Clinical efficacy of newer agents in short-duration therapy for community-acquired pneumonia.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, the most important respiratory tract pathogen implicated in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), is becoming increasingly resistant in vitro to the beta -lactams and macrolides, and fluoroquinolone resistance has been detected. A growing body of evidence suggests that prolonged antimicrobial use may contribute directly and indirectly to increased antimicrobial resistanc...

Antimicrobial resistance among neonatal pathogens in developing countries.

INTRODUCTION Knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and trends in resistance patterns among major pathogens causing infections in young infants (up to 90 days of life) is an important component of developing community-based management strategies. Hospital-based data suggest alarming rates of resistance to ampicillin and gentamicin, the first-line antimicrobial agents recommended by WHO for treat...
