Reptile Mycotic Infections from the Literature and 55 Cases

چکیده
As with other animals, mycotic disease is usually secondary to other infections (bacteria, parasitic, viral), or to predisposing factors such as poor husbandry, suboptimal temperatures, prolonged antibiotic use, and poor nutrition. In reptiles, fungal infections of the skin, shell, and subcutis are more common than those of other organ systems. Many fungal infections are caused by saprophytes that have invaded the tissue. In this review, we briefly cover the literature reports on fungal disease in the three reptile groups; chelonians, lizards, and snakes. Tables 1, 2, and 3 are summaries of the cases from our service. Our cases are presented after the literature review. The majority of our cases have no information pertaining to treatment or of culture reports that identify the fungal organisms. Histologically, the microbes are divided into yeast forms (generally with pseudohyphae formation indicating tissue invasion) and fungal hyphae. It is difficult to make an accurate identification of fungal organisms based on fungal hyphae in hematoxylin and eosin sections. It is assumed that most of these microbes are environmental contaminants, such as Fusarium, Absidia, Mucor, Aspergillus, and Rhizopus.

Mycotic aortic aneurysm as a postsurgical complication: report of a case and review of the literature
Mycotic aneurysms are localized and irreversible dilatations of the arteries caused by weakening and damaging the arterial wall by an invasive organism establishing infective arteritis. Mycotic aneurysm of the thoracic aorta is a rare event; however, it can be fatal if not diagnosed early or not treated appropriately. Clinical findings are usually nonspecific; however, c...
متن کاملMycotic pseudoaneurysms complicating renal transplantation: a case series and review of literature
INTRODUCTION Kidney transplantation can be complicated by infection and subsequent development of mycotic aneurysm, endangering the survival of the graft and the patient. Management of this condition in five cases is discussed, accompanied by a review of the relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATIONS Five patients, three men 42-, 67- and 57-years-old and two women 55- and 21-years-old (mean age ...
متن کاملNon-typhoidal Salmonella bacteraemia in elderly patients: an increased risk for endovascular infections, osteomyelitis and mortality.
Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a common pathogen causing foodborne infections, bacteraemia, and extra-intestinal focal infections (EFIs) in humans. The study compares the clinical characteristics of elderly patients with NTS bacteraemia with those of young adults. Of 272 adults with NTS bacteraemia identified in this study, 162 (59·6%) were aged ⩾55 years. EFIs were observed in 36% of the 16...
متن کاملA retrospective study of cutaneous fungal infections in patients referred to Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad, Iran during 2000-2011
Background and Purpose: Detection of agents responsible for cutaneous mycosis may be effective in the prevention of fungal infections from environmental and animal sources. With this background in mind, in this study, we aimed to identify the distribution of cutaneous mycotic infections in patients referred to Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad, Iran during 2000- 2011. Materials and Methods: In ...
متن کاملMultiple mycotic pseudoaneurysms due to Yersinia enterocolitica: report of a case and review of the literature.
The etiology of mycotic aneurysms is variable but most often includes streptococci, staphylococci, Salmonella, and Pseudomonas infections. Yersinia enterocolitica is an organism that has been infrequently associated with vascular infections. We report a case of two ruptured mycotic pseudoaneurysms occurring in the same patient in the superficial femoral artery and the infrarenal abdominal aorta...
