چکیده

Recent advances in ultrafast electron diffraction offer the possibility to image isolated molecules with sub-Angstrom spatial resolution in ultrafast time scales. In particular, diffraction from aligned molecules has opened the door to retrieving threedimensional structures directly from experimental data. In this manuscript we review the progress in ultrafast gas electron diffraction and discuss remaining challenges to achieve a temporal resolution of sub-100 fs, which is needed to observe the nuclear motion in chemical reactions in the gas phase.

Imaging of alignment and structural changes of carbon disulfide molecules using ultrafast electron diffraction.

Imaging the structure of molecules in transient-excited states remains a challenge due to the extreme requirements for spatial and temporal resolution. Ultrafast electron diffraction from aligned molecules provides atomic resolution and allows for the retrieval of structural information without the need to rely on theoretical models. Here we use ultrafast electron diffraction from aligned molec...

Imaging of isolated molecules with ultrafast electron pulses.

Imaging isolated molecules in three dimensions with atomic resolution is important for elucidating complex molecular structures and intermediate states in molecular dynamics. This goal has so far remained elusive due to the random orientation of molecules in the gas phase. We show that three-dimensional structural information can be retrieved from multiple electron diffraction patterns of align...

Imaging ultrafast dynamics of molecules with laser-induced electron diffraction.

We introduce a laser-induced electron diffraction method (LIED) for imaging ultrafast dynamics of small molecules with femtosecond mid-infrared lasers. When molecules are placed in an intense laser field, both low- and high-energy photoelectrons are generated. According to quantitative rescattering (QRS) theory, high-energy electrons are produced by a rescattering process where electrons born a...

Breaking resolution limits in ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy.

Ultrafast electron microscopy and diffraction are powerful techniques for the study of the time-resolved structures of molecules, materials, and biological systems. Central to these approaches is the use of ultrafast coherent electron packets. The electron pulses typically have an energy of 30 keV for diffraction and 100-200 keV for microscopy, corresponding to speeds of 33-70% of the speed of ...

Imaging an aligned polyatomic molecule with laser-induced electron diffraction

Laser-induced electron diffraction is an evolving tabletop method that aims to image ultrafast structural changes in gas-phase polyatomic molecules with sub-Ångström spatial and femtosecond temporal resolutions. Here we demonstrate the retrieval of multiple bond lengths from a polyatomic molecule by simultaneously measuring the C-C and C-H bond lengths in aligned acetylene. Our approach takes t...
