چکیده

Over recent decades, the numerous coronary revascularisation procedures performed either by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or coronary bypass surgery has led to an increasing number of patients who are no longer eligible for additional revascularisation procedures. This number of patients is expected to rise even further in view of an increase in life expectancy in patients with coronary artery disease. In a recent issue of the Netherlands Heart Journal, the investigators from the University Medical Center Utrecht report interesting findings on the use of a coronary sinus device in patients with refractory angina in whom there were no options for conventional revascularisation procedures [1]. This device is a balloon expandable stainless steel stent that creates a focal stenosis in the coronary sinus leading to an increase in coronary venous pressure. The principle of improving myocardial perfusion by elevating coronary venous pressure was introduced as early as 1954 when the coronary sinus was partially ligated in patients with angina pectoris [2]. The publication of the COSIRA trial has rekindled interest in the principle of enhancing coronary venous pressure for relief of angina by means of a stent implantation. This prospective multicentre double-blind sham-controlled trial evaluated coronary sinus stent implantation in patients with refractory angina and demonstrated both symptomatic improvement and an improvement in quality of life over a six-month follow-up period [3]. The study from Abawi et al. [1] evaluated the same coronary sinus stent device as in the COSIRA trial. It is

Molecular dynamics analysis of structural factors influencing back door pi release in myosin.

The back door has been proposed to be an exit pathway from the myosin active site for phosphate (P(i)) generated by adenosine 5'-triphosphate hydrolysis. We used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interaction of P(i) with the back door and the plausibility of P(i) release via this route. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed on the Dictyostelium motor domain with bound Mg...

Alternative male mating behaviors dependent on relative body size in captive oval squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana (Cephalopoda, Loliginidae).

We observed the reproductive behavior of the oval squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana in captivity. The male used three different mating behaviors: male-parallel (MP), male-upturned (MU) and sneaking. Male competition over females frequently occurred before and during the female egg-laying period, and the outcome of most fights depended on male body size. Larger males guarded their partners from othe...

O12: Off the Couch and Out the Door: Improving Treatment Through a Refined Understanding of Psychotherapeutic Change

State-of-the-art psychotherapy for anxiety disorders represents some of the most efficacious treatments in the mental health literature. Nevertheless, these treatments are not panacea. Too many patients drop out of treatment, response rates leave room for improvement, and residual symptomatology is common. The quest to improve therapy for patients suffering from mental disorders necessitates on...

Should Attractive Males Sneak: The Trade-Off between Current and Future Offspring

Alternative reproductive tactics are predicted to be adopted by less competitive males when competition for fertilization is intense. Yet, in some species, competitively superior males use an alternative tactic alongside the conventional tactic. This can jeopardize their success through the conventional tactic, but surprisingly little attention has been paid to this cost. We investigated 1) the...
