Measurement of Genotoxic Endpoints in Earthworms Exposed to Radioactive Wastes from an Abandoned Uranium Mine

چکیده
The main objective of this study was to assess the sensitivity of genotoxic endpoints, to be considered in earthworm’s reproduction assays, performed under the evaluation of soils contaminated with radioactive wastes. Earthworms were exposed, under laboratorial conditions, to a contaminated soil from the Cunha Baixa uranium mine and to LUFA 2.2 soil (control soil). Earthworms (Eisenia andrei Bouché) were sampled from assay chambers after 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days, 14 days and 56 days of exposure. Some simple techniques like comet assay and flow cytometry were used to assess DNA damages and cytotoxicity in earthworm’s coelomocytes. Higher DNA damage was recorded in earthworms exposed to the contaminated soil when compared to the control. Flow cytometry revealed that earthworm’s coelomocytes were affected by the exposure to radioactive wastes, by causing depletion in cells responsible for the effector functions of the immune system of these organisms. These results suggest that DNA damages and cytotoxicity assessed by both techniques are sensitive endpoints for environmental risk assessment of radiological contaminated sites.

Bioaccessibility of U, Th and Pb in solid wastes and soils from an abandoned uranium mine.
Bioaccessible U, Th, Pb and the 238U decay products 214Pb and 210Pb have been determined, using a modified Unified BARGE Method (UBM), in waste solids and soils from an abandoned uranium mine in South West England, UK. Maximum aqua regia extractable concentrations for U, Th and Pb were 16,200, 3.8 and 4750 μg g-1, respectively. 238U had highest activity concentrations near the mine shaft, where...

Background and objectives Mining results in degradation of rangelands ecosystem structure and function. Coal mining in rangelands produces significant quantities of waste dumps in mining area which are considered as the main environmental pollutants in the site and surrounding ecosystems. Vegetation restoration in mining area could reduce soil pollution and could be of great help in restoring ...
متن کاملHospital wastes management in Mazandaran Province with emphasis on genotoxic waste management
Background and Objective: Hospital wastes with the content of infectious, pathologic, sharp, pharmaceupitical and genotoxic materials are classified as hazardous wastes. Of which, genotoxic residues wirh mutagenic and teratogenic effects are of most great concern on human health. Genetic wastes are referred to as cytotoxic, chemical, and radioactive drugs used to treat cancer or treat transplan...
متن کاملRemoval and Recovery of Uranium from Solid Wastes by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Fluid Leaching Method
Supercritical CO2 fluid leaching (SFL) method using supercritical CO2 fluid containing a complex of HNO3 tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) was applied to removal of uranium from radioactive solid wastes. Sea sands, incineration ashes and porous alumina bricks were employed as matrixes of simulated solid wastes. Real radioactive incineration ash wastes and firebrick wastes were also subjected to the S...
